Buy / Sell / Wanted rules
« on: November 11, 2012, 12:07:41 am »
Moderator Note: We seem to get many people sign up and only post stuff for sale. Often not even electronics related (and no PC hardware is not electronics related). This section is for the occasional sale of your personal stuff. If you have good reason to beleive that you need some leeway on this please contact us before posting a shower of posts as otherwise your posts will be removed and you will be banned without warning.

Hi everyone,

this section has become a spam pile so I would like to suggest a couple of rules (mods, maybe "sticky" this?)

1. All "for sale" topics would start with "FS: " and include the manufacturer and model number of the item
2. If you are looking to buy something from eevblog users, start with "WTB: " (want to buy)
3. If you are looking for a source of something, start with "LFS: " (looking for source)
4. If you want to trade, start with "WTT: " (want to trade)
5. If you cannot list all items, end the topic name with "[MORE]"
6. If you found a deal on eBay and would like to share - "EBAY: "
7. If you found a sale and would like to share - "SALE (UK): " with a 2-digit country code in the parenthesis
8. If there is an auction you know about - "AUCTION (AU):"  with a 2-digit country code in the parenthesis
9. Links to items must not be short-form or affiliate-type links, but rather a direct link to the product.

Examples:
FS: Some old stuff <<< BAD
FS: Used DS1052 <<< GOOD
FS: Used Rigol DS1052 oscilloscope <<< EXCELLENT
FS: Agilent scopes, DMMs, Power supplies [MORE] <<< GOOD

WTB: Fluke 8840A parts <<< BAD!
WTB: Fluke 8840A GPIB board and transformer <<< EXCELLENT

LFS: 8-pin connectors <<< BAD
LFS: Cheap DB9 right angle male solder-in connectors <<< EXCELLENT

These guidelines are used on 99% of all classifieds boards and I think it will help clean up this section.

This will help everyone save time from sifting thru every topic to find stuff.

PS: Someone mentioned the Agilent U1272A was on sale a couple a months ago, I got mine for $329 with $100 rebate which I cashed and promptly blew on DMM leads - thank you.

Does not look like your plan is working out to well. It is a good idea though.

With any 'world wide' forum like this one, I would suggest to indicate *always* the country in the the title, also for the FS/WTB/etc. cases.

Great suggestions OP.

And not only for the FS/WTB section.  I'm so tired of "OH MY LOOK AT THIS - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART" titles....and it's a worn out power cable that "could" kill someone....meh.

Posts that are simply links to your eBay ad should be deleted.

I think the country codes should be posted anyways, for any sale, just so people know what type of shipping costs and times they are getting themselves into. It should be the following:

FS (CN): Tektronix 1002B Oscilloscope with probes
WTB (US): Fluke 87V DMM
WTT(GB): Fluke 87V for Agilent 1253B

This way, people can know at a glance, if the item can be locally picked up, cheaply shipped, or is out of their reach.
I'm not saying we should kill all stupid people. I'm just saying that we should remove all product safety labels and let natural selection do its work.

People also don't have time to convert to USD either. Also why would you post an ad in USD if you are sellng in GBP/AUD/other?

This forum is pretty much every man for himself/free state/open community/no rules and telling people what to do and how to do things properly seems to be frowned upon, and people are free to ignore rules and guidance as they see fit anyway so this thread is basically pointless.

america is not the only country in the world it seems a bit of an insult to every other country to post every price in usd this is an international forum not an american one plees if you want to deel international one you just have to convert currency its just how it is.

I'm an American and I don't mind everybody else posting in their local currency. If I really want the item Ill check the conversion rate, if shipping is viable. But for the most part, I can tell roughly how things will look in USD just from experience. British pounds are pretty easy, done enough deals with the UK to tell, euros are harder but do-able, anything else is pretty uncommon for here, and I have no idea if a shekel is worth more than a yen or not :D

It is useful to know what kind if currency you are dealing in too, I've seen a few posts here for XX dollars, and have no idea if its in USD or AUD. Usually I guess by the country flag if they have one.

Shipping though is one of the more annoying bits for me. I know some users probably don't do international shipping, an some items are too heavy to ship across the pond (use common sense). My biggest peeve is that if you are fine shipping internationally, say so, and if you refuse to ship internationally, say that too. No need even to give an estimate, that can be figured out later.

I think it would be wise to stick to the most widely used currencies. Don't use Zimbawean dollars just because you feel like it.

I beg your pardon if this question has already been discussed elsewhere but i've found nothing about it.

I see that in every forum i follow (video, satellite, radio, electronics) there is a section for the Buy/Sell or Classified section where every member could place their request for buying or for selling some stuff.
It's a place where i go with a certain frequency..and i think i'm not the only one...more overv in this period at least here in
Europe where the money are not coming in so easely...but are going out so quickly.. :-(

What i noticed is that is not so easy to make a search through the ads searching what i need..

You try to give some indication for formatting in the good way the ads in order to be more easy to catch what is needed..
But it depend to much from the person who write the ads...
I think that it could be an idea to guide the writing of the ads in order to obtain better results...

The board with the section that go more in the direction i like is the avsforum .

What i'd like to have is a sort of categorization of the ads chosing between fields already populated through a multiple choice option..
It could be useful to be forced to put our ads through a guided way.
Once decided the field (Type, Group, Brand and so on)  it's sufficient to put the principal choices inside the field as values and it should be more easy to find what one is searching for.

I try also to search in the support page of the simple machine forum software but i've found nothing interesting...

I try to explain with an example:

First of all the status of the ads:
STATUS
1)Open
2)Closed

Then the Type of the Ads:
TYPE:
1)Buy
2)Sell
3)Change
4)Rent
5)...

Then the macro group in which the product can be classified:
GROUP:
1) Oscilloscope
2) Multimeter
3) Power Supply
4) Solder Station
5) Spectrum Analyzer
6) ...
7) Other

then the Brand of the product :
BRAND :
1) HP
2) FLUKE
3) HAKKO
4)...
5) OTHER

And so on with the desiderd detail level. Of course more one go in depth and more it's the work to settle the values in the field.
but once this works is made it's necessary less work in order to mantain updated the info inside the fields.
(Not every day is borning a new company so not every day is mandatory to add values..)

Of course the more items are placed as value in the fields and the less ads will be going to the Other section...and the more useful will be this solution..

My firsts toughts about this way of categorizing ads is that it could be a good solution to help people to write the ads and people to search between ads...

The big difficult in implementing this way of working is to force people to informe other member that the sale or purchase request is no longer active as the product sold or has found what he was looking ... or simply changed his mind ...

But in this situation the search filtering by date could be a good strategy to limit the results...

I thank you for the time you dedicate in reading my post and i'll wait for your opinion.

B/S/T Forum Suggestion
« Reply #14 on: April 07, 2014, 06:55:21 pm »
While I respect your laissez-faire attitude to the B/S/T forum can we make a rule like 1 post per month. If you want to sell multiple items in a month they just go in that one post? A certain user (who shall remain nameless) basically uses the forum as his own personal hype board for his ebay sales. It clogs up the posts from the real members and is a general nuisance.

I hope it's not me. I know who you are talking about but I do post a lot of stuff I find on eBay that's a fair price...

Nope not you for sure. You post stuff you find, not everything you post are your own sales. Plus the sheer volume of posts doesn't even compare.

Ah yes. As well as starting a new topic for every damn thing no one wants to buy.

Is it too much to ask if you're not shipping worldwide to specify in the title at least the continent?
I know I'm numskull, but I look around me and I feel better.

Greetings All,

I was scrolling through the wanted/ selling section and saw a link about a huge eBay lot of vintage gear. I ended up purchasing the lot and would like permission to sale the items here. The eBay seller would not ship, BUT I will ship them to anyone interested. I did not pay much for the lot (relative to the actual value) and I will not gouge the readers of the blog. I promise to sell the stuff at fair prices and I am only offering this service to help the EE community, not make a huge profit.

Though I am new to (posting on) the blog, I've been a reader for years and a long time follower of the YoutTube channel. In short, I am not a member here just to sell stuff. I buy more than I sell. I hope the people who want this gear and maybe don't have a pile of cash to buy it new, will be able to benefit from the eBay lot.

I replied to the original link, stating I purchased the lot, and will only post items under that link, if approved. In addition, I plan to send in a couple of the items for mailbag and two-minute tear down.

Thank you,

Chris

Did you look at the lot? I am certain there's a bunch of stuff people would like or need for their shops. All I would like to do here is get the site admin to give me permission to list the pieces because I am a "newbie" to the forum.

I agree with your "get what you can for them" but not everyone is willing or able to pick them up in NY City. I bought it because its a great vintage gear lot and I am certain they do not belong going to a scrapper or junk dealer.

Hopefully, someone will find a use for the piece I don't keep.

Cheers mate,

Chris
