ebay 3458 for sale
« on: December 15, 2017, 12:35:19 pm »
I've got one of my lab machines for sale... it's
the one for 4400 with the 4 year history. If it
doesn't sell, it will be for sale for a lot less here.

Edit:  Maybe not.

I have noticed this a lot on high end gear on ebay that it is sometimes like totally abused and dirty.
Its beyond me why people would do such thing.

It's been sold, so this thread is moot.

Hi, Bud!
I have the equipment in the kitchen because it keeps +/- 1F.
Lots of folks I sell to have pretty 'labs' that swing over 5 degrees.
And some have their equipment in the basement, where it's
pretty but at 66F... That gives them little cushion in the 5C
allowed on either side of the cal temp, if it's cal'd at 33C. (3458)

Some of the worst trash I've bought on fleabay was buffed
to a high shine by flippers.. One didn't even have a reference
board installed, some are drifters, etc., speaking 3458s here.

I keep my lab mules upside down with the covers loose - gives
1 minute access to the A/D and AC boards, where I do most
of my work.

I do love to look at primo equipment in million dollar labs. I get
all the Keysight flyers with the gleaming new boxes... just
beautiful. I wish that someday I might have a dream-looking
lab, with copper mesh walls and a JJA in the corner.

I was in the army during the 1968 TET... got back in 69Jan.
We had a saying... if it looks stupid but it works, it ain't stupid.
So far, all of my 3458s have gone through 17025 cals with
'no adjustment needed'.

So.... keep polishing and buffing your gear so that it will look great.

I really appreciate that.

Just make sure it can perform better than my dirty stuff.

The last one  sold was an ex-IBM 002 3458.

Right now, I'm getting ready to swap most
of the boards that have been running for 2 years
or more in the mules into a fresh 3458 I just
got off fleabay. Rather than waiting a year to
see if its boards are good....

It should be for sale in a month or 2....

Some of the components on the AC boards and A/D boards run
quite hot... they tend to fail and give hard errors.

The drift issue hinges on the 'magic' module. It's unobtainium.
These were pretty solid, using chip fab technology that was
on line in the 80s... (I started at IBM Burlington Vt in the 70s)

There was aother run of these made for HP a long while ago, I think.
When they ran short  of them,  it looks like they now have a kludge
thing daughterboard for both of the large A/D board modules.

Net is, that if you're lucky enough to find a board with a hard
fail and a supplier for this 1980s stuff, you can fix the fault
and then watch for a few months to see if drift comes in.
If it does, gold recovery time...
and drift detection requiresa lot of trusted 10V standards
to be sure of what you're seeing.
