You are not missing much, I did purchase the Galileo Gen 1, and even if it's cool that it can run windows programs the GPIO is hindered by being attached to an I2C bus.

Gen 2 has native GPIO support but the ones that Microsoft were giving away were Gen 1. And recently Microsoft added support for Gen 2 boards.

I newer got anything, got an confirmation about beeing registered and all, but nothing.

I ordered from Seeedstudio when they have some offers on the Galileo and Edison
