F/S (Ebay UK) More 8.5 digit goodness (3458A)
« on: March 03, 2014, 08:33:05 am »
No affiliation with seller, just something I noticed trawling Ebay for interesting stuff.

I'm sorely tempted myself but being honest don't have a use for one and buying it keeping it in cal would just be a waste of ££

Agreed which is why I'm not buying it :)

The same seller has a Fluke 5500A at just shy of £12k - also looks to have a Rolls Royce sticker on it.

if you check closely the sticker in one of the pictures it's been owned by Rolls Royce
Yes, I do wonder what Rolls needed an 8.5 digit voltmeter for though, and I note the last cal is 2003 so it might not have been used in a while.

They manufacture aircraft engines, and might need to do some testing their, for the environmental sensors and need to make sure the temps from ADC are correct. Or for R&D.
I'm not saying we should kill all stupid people. I'm just saying that we should remove all product safety labels and let natural selection do its work.

If it were a bit cheaper I'd almost be tempted.

Or they just had an in-house cal lab, I suppose.

What is a typical price for one of these things? People seem to think this one is a bit over priced.

They usually go from just under US$3K to US$5K or more.

You also need to take in to account that the specifications are for under +-1°C temperature change since the last automatic calibration. Which basically means you need a temperature controlled room if you intend to get the specified accuracy from it.

There's all kinds of stuff on eBay with low starting bids, has nothing to do with the price they actually went for in the end ;)

Last CAL 2003. Usually after about 10 years the battery for the calibration data is nearly dead.
Why does the seller not connect the part to his FLUKE calibrator to show that all is ok?
I think this could easily double the price.

With best regards

Andreas

It's an HP, that's about 13 years, or older.
If it's working, the CAL constants can be read out via GPIB.

Replacement RAMs (3EA) cost about 20-30 bucks, and content can be reprogrammed.
Even very old units can be updated to actual standard (firmware).

It's big fun, just do it!

FYI

I just asked for shipping price to DK

Seller said £75  :-\

Most of my packages from KJDS ie. my K2015 dmm , and a quite heavy microscope boom was like £25 with UPS and GLS

When i wrote "it was quite a steep shipping price , and that i had good experience with GLS".
Seller answered

Quote
great . use them and you can collect .

The above combined with the blurry pics , no mention of serial# , if it passes selftest or have other startup issues.
And the ebay text
Quote
no warranty but more than happy for buyer to check first

Suggests i have to look for another seller/3458A.

Happy bidding

Ohh btw. make sure to check this out
http://www.gellerlabs.com/HP%203458A%20DMM.htm

You might want to ask for that serial , and if it has any "Cal/error" messages on startup.
