How do I beat the Maxim corporate email checker...?
Call a sales office and tell them you are a student and would like the parts for a project.
That seriously works? Great!
It doesn't work 100% of the time but I'd say a good 95-99% of the time. In general, most have no problem helping a student out. Plus it doesn't hurt that a student who learns on particular hardware will tend to favor that as an engineer.
In general just keep in mind:
1) Know what you need and what you need it for. As rjsouza said, don't go around asking too many questions that illustrate that you have NO clue what you need or how to use it. That's not to say don't ask questions, in and of themselves informed questions are a good thing. They show you know what you need even if you aren't quite sure which part is the most ideal.
2) Don't be greedy. Ask for things you need. Don't make a laundry list of expensive parts just because you want them. If you can use it
3) Never forget the power of a thank you. If a particular salesman helps you get some sample parts; don't forget to drop a thanks.
