TOPLOSER - Review from Fraser
« on: October 18, 2017, 05:16:09 pm »
Fellow Forum members,

I have recently purchased a couple of items from Toploser, a 4 channel 2Gs/s Tenma DSO and a huge UP! Box 3D printer.

I have purchased items from Ian in the past and had no reservations about doing so again. He is a true Gentleman and he has a well deserved excellent reputation on this forum. Ian often deals in some very nice quality equipment that he has either tested for correct operation, or has had it repaired by the OEM's agent. We are fortunate to have Ian on this forum as he sells his equipment at very reasonable prices. He is a great chap to have on this forum and a trustworthy source of test equipment and 'toys' for those of us searching for such.

I would like to thank Ian for his kindness in his past, and recent dealings with me. I also want to highlight what a generous and honorable person he truly is. I got to meet Ian in person today and he was exactly as I had expected.... an honest and friendly fellow techie who exudes good Karma and honesty. I could not wish to have met a nicer chap  :)

Ian is a great person to do business with, but then anyone reading about his previous sales on this forum can see that for themselves  :-+

Thanks for the superb DSO and amazing 3D printer Ian  :-+ Thank you also for the other items that I received from you today  :)

Sorry Fraser, but he also is very honest as well, and absolutely stands by all that he sells, no bull about anything, and very forthright about what he does offer, warts and all.

Sadly that means his sales here often end really fast, and he will do the processing really fast as well. Then the longest part starts, waiting for the delivery. Also he used to chuck in oddments into the parcels as well if available and if asked, and I was almost more impressed with that than the stuff I paid for, but this depends only if the odd stuff was cheaper to him than bubble wrap.

Superb recommendations for TopLoser from my side as well.  :-+ Some brand name distributors (I didn't have very good experiences, despite willing to pay quite a bit) should learn from him :)

Well, what can I add ...
Since 2014 I have bought from Ian and every single time it was perfect!
Just received my 10 pieces Raspberry Pi today

Thanks so much Ian!

Everything I bought from him was top notch and exactly as stated.

He's very honest. When some issues were found, he offered full refund to me and keeping equipment, no questions asked, which I refused and asked only that much it costs to fix. I think, in total I spent more than EUR 10k on his stuff.

I bought an item from him, and it lasted ~30 mins before failing. A little investigation revealed that a wire had was making an intermittent connection at one end of a cable - easily repaired. Key points: it is entirely understandable that he didn't spot the fault, and it was an easy repair which is working years later.

I mentioned this in passing to him, and without any quibble whatsoever, he offered me a sensible and acceptable deal on my next purchase.

So, a satisfied repeat customer based on a sensible response from him.

His pricing is brilliant and the only thing that matches his prices is the integrity he shows in any deal. He has been nothing but a gent with every purchase.

The only moan I have is that he sells everything too quick and does not have enough things to sell.

Fraser, STOP praising this guy.  Please delete this thread immediately.

If word gets out it will make it even harder to get a buy order in to Ian before the dreaded "SOLD" appears.

You may want to rephrase the title.

Someone could think you're accusing TopLoser of trying to pay you to give him reviews (actually buying reviews)

Actually, when all are gentlemen there are no problems.

I've recently started wondering how legally binding a handshake can be considered. I know there is a problem with possible ambiguity, but at the same time I consider "shaking on it" while looking someone in the eye much more profound than signing a contract. That's just a formality.

I don't know (much as regards this) about other countries, and I'm not an expert (on law), but in the UK, I think it would be called a "Verbal Contract", and would be reasonably binding in UK law.
There have been (many I think), court cases, where people have been held to these "Verbal Contacts".

Where it gets complicated, is where someone sells you a car and verbally says (it is PERFECT, NO FAULTS, etc). You then give them a cheque for the deposit (hence it is somewhat provable), and give them £cash for the rest of the money.
On arriving home with your car, you find out it has got lots of major (expensive) faults, and is practically worthless. You can take them to court (generally, businesses are often held to account if selling dodgy vehicles, but if sold privately, it is often "sold as seen", even if that is NOT explicitly stated) if necessary, because of all their (verbal contract) claims about how good/reliable the car was going to be.

Cars are a bad example here, because cars (when sold privately), are generally accepted to be sold "as seen". I.e. buyer beware. So I should have thought up a better example.

One of my greatest regrets in life is that I chose my brother to be best man at my wedding instead of TopLoser. Maybe next time.

But, joking aside, I agree with all the positive comments above, I've also found him a great guy to deal with.

Mak's you wonder (well at least I do) why he choose this alias !?

TBH the "Loser" suffix doesn't have a super positive ring to it, or does it  :-[? :-)

Would you buy form "Bakery Old" or "Garage Rust"  :-DD ?

So TL, if you read this, please, if you like 'whats the story about your alias'?

I think it should be TOPSELLER IMHO  ;)

Try registering the domain name topseller or topwinner... even 20 years ago when I registered toploser!

Simple as that, plus toploser is never taken as a username on any site.

Plus it manages customer expectations - they chose to buy from a guy with a username toploser...

Plus you don’t forget it.

He's still alive, but he watched too many episodes of 'Escape to the Chateau' on tv during lockdown. Ended up buying a 17th century manor house in the South of France, right on the edge of the Pyrenees National Park near Lourdes. Moved here permanently a few months ago, container full of crap/bargains is still back in the Uk till I figure out how to get it here.

Working in Spain quite a bit recently, incredible drive to work each day through the Pyrenees (see pic).

At least I have a bit more space now...

3 floors, 8 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 3 kitchens, living room, banquet hall, laundry, pigsty, woodshed, 10m pool and utility room... still keep discovering hidden bits. Some of the rooms are > 60m2 floor space - I could fit my entire previous house in just one of the rooms.

All furnished and just needs a massive amount of cosmetic work. plus a total rewire because the French don't understand wires!! Or plumbing, but that's another story...

Only £159K

South of France... you just have to have patience!!

Barely connected by the worlds slowest Orange wifi hotspot located at the local post office. Phone line will take weeks to get installed once I get a French bank account, but to get a French bank account I need a utility bill, and to get a utility bill... well you know where this is going!!

Wow I can only dream off this but I am too much a coward to leave my country and job.
I visit France in the summer holidays, always love it. When you at least try your best to speak french the people are really nice and I understand why they would not with all those foreigners masses flooding in the summer.
I hope you get the house back in shape without too much hidden disasters, and don't watch this movie  ;)

Get rid of the vines, it holds moisture which is bad for bricks and gives path to the roof to all sort of wild life.

Already gone, it was left unattended for 6 years got a touch out of control...

The estate agent who handled the sale said he was sick of showing dozens of people round properties knowing full well that they didn’t have the nerve to leave their safe little ‘bubble’ back in the UK.

I should have done this 10 years ago, it’s a lot of unknowns but you get to feel that you’re living a life again and not just going through the same routine every day.

You’re not the first to think of that movie! And you’re not far wrong either!! Every day has a WTF moment, I really need to start a thread about French electrics to stay vaguely on topic here.

You need an assistant?

Several would be nice. Ones with multiple skills and no fear of heights would be especially welcome...

Multi-skilled and fearing only the impact (I'm over 6ft, I live at height), but perhaps slightly allergic to the French. :P

There’s no need to interact with the locals, I have an 8’ wall all round the grounds and massive gates that remain mostly locked! Tomorrow I’m stripping the wallpaper (and probably the plaster beneath) from the staircase walls... I hate heights but the impact would be blessed relief!!

But the seller tricked you, it's not 17th century. Clearly says "depuis 1950" on the label...  ;)

I know you are joking, but here it is:

Quote
Located in a pretty village 15 mins from Lourdes is this splendid 17th Century manor house offering stately rooms throughout it's 440m² of living space. Offering 8 bedrooms, grand fireplaces, sitting room, banquet hall with kitchen and mezzanine plus outside a terrace and 930m² of garden enjoying a swimming pool and summer kitchen. This magnificent semi-detached home will allow for a large family, a bed and breakfast or gîte project and is perfect for your new life on the doorstep of the Pyrenees National Park.

The entrance gate opens into the lovely garden with swimming pool, summer kitchen and terrace where you will spend hours relaxing by the pool and taking meals outside.

The main kitchen measures 20m² and enjoys a wood burning stove and a 16m² larder and storage room. A doorway leads down in to a corridor serving the spacious 62m² sitting room, also with fireplace and 6m² rear study.

At the end of the corridor is the oak staircase leading to the upper floors and access to a 21m² laundry room.

The first floor of the main house has three generous bedrooms. The first is a corner bedroom measuring 34m² with five large windows, fireplace, 5m² dressing room, alcove and shower and toilet. The second measures 34m² also with fireplace, 11m² dressing room and shower and ornate cupboards dating from the 17th century. Finally the third 22m² bedroom also has a private bathroom.

The second floor attic has 77m² of space. The current layout allows for three large bedrooms. Of course, these rooms may be used as you wish...games room, music room, library...

Finally, accessed from the laundry room is the splendid 66m² banquet room, complete with sitting area with grand fireplace, 10-place banquet table, mezzanine, two bedrooms of 23m² and 20m² and rear 10m² serving kitchen. Side doors open directly to the outside garden terrace. Perfect for hosting parties or for use as an independent gite or bed & breakfast.

The garden has a firewood storage shelter and a shed housing the pool filter system.

This superb dwelling has lots of charm and qualities you will not find in any modern property. This represents a wonderful opportunity to obtain an historic home on the doorstep of the Pyrenees National Park. There is oak flooring throughout and views of the village and surrounding countryside from every window. The house is in general need of some loving care.

Construction is traditional. The roof is covered in slate and tile. Windows are wooden and single glazed with wooden shutters. The property is not connected to the village sewage mains.

Wish I had the courage...

That sounds familiar! It is actually connected to mains drains (kind of!). I put a crazy low offer for it one night after too much vodka and the seller met me halfway on price.

Feel the fear and do it anyway. I don’t want to be on my deathbed saying “would have, could have, should have”

Dipped my toes in the water and no regrets so far!

Are you planning to put solar panels on the roof? The only problem that I see in you purchase is the energy efficiency of that kind of building. That's gonna be a hell to put a good insulation on all the walls. But nice to see you again!

French electrics, I guess they are using the same systems that are in use on French vehicles, with all those odd quirks they involve dodgy connections, poor regulation and frequent lack of operation.

if your house has been rewired lets say 30 years ago, it's normal the electrical wiring is not top of the art, especially if it has been home-made.
today french homes are correctly wired.

One of the (few) benefits of the EU regulations ?  :)
The French did their part of regulations in Europe in the 19th century, where we still profit from.
