Nice find on the thermometer.  They're $30+ on the Canadian site.
The calipers though are just the cheap Chinese ones. I got a set off Ali for only a few dollars.

I grabbed 2 of each earlier despite having equivalents of both anyway. I hope the calipers are the metal ones not the plastic rubbish, I mean I paid less than a whole quid including delivery!  :-DD

Just checked Amazon and they are now up to £ 3.83 but the IR thermometers have only gone up from 97p to £ 1.03 !! (I think I paid £30 for mine a couple of years ago)

I have also got an email that they have been despatched and a tracking number. I can't back out of the order now if I find them cheaper elsewhere. Damn!  :scared:

There are still calipers for 97p and I managed to buy two of each, for that money they're a bargain if only to dissect.

But, I'm wondering if they've got the serial port output, seems a lot of the cheapies are a clone of the Mitutoyo ones and speak the same language.

If that's the case I'm thinking DRO for an XY table

... But I guess still worth taking a punt on.

Thanks for the heads up.
I took a (less than £2) punt as well. After all, what's the worst that could happen?

I also ordered one of each, and they are shown as dispatched but not arriving until 31st August.  Presumably these are coming from China.  If they arrive, and assuming they do work after a fashion, then I'll consider it £2 well spent.  I already have equivalents that did cost a bit more than these, so I'm considering them as "backup" items.

However, this "new" (to me) feature of Amazon, allowing direct sales by Chinese sellers without any indication of the origin of the items (unless you look up the seller info) is a bit off-putting.  At least on Ebay I can restrict the list to items (allegedly) sold from the UK.

I just ordered one of each. The reviews look mixed on the calipers some receive metal ones, some receive composite. The metal reviews could be faked or they could just be throwing what ever they have in stock.

It doesn't matter, the metal ones are the ones pictured so that is what you should get. However you have to ask yourself if you end up with plastic ones for 97 pence and complain, maybe you need to take a step back...

Amazon selling stuff from China is a new one on me, I wonder if these clearly low deals coming from Shenzhen and Hong Kong are new sellers flooding Amazon with loss leaders in order to get the points or whatever required for establishing their Amazon presence?

Perhaps there is some other tat going cheap?

Yes, it does.

Indeed it does, just need a few accounts, each taking a few £1 from thousands of different people and you've got a very good living.

I've seen this a couple of times at Amazon UK over last few months, goods at reasonable (not exceptionally) price but no real indication that they are being sent from Asia. Noticed shipping occasionally marked as "expedited shipping" but that could be a coincidence.

I believe this may well be drop shipping style business where the company is located in one country but the company holds no stock of its own and the goods are sent direct from a warehouse in China somewhere. The warehouse has all the company stationary and when an order comes through it gets automatically processed for that company with their receipt stationary.

I'm quietly confident they'll turn up as they're coming from two different sellers who are still active but are now charging a lot more for the same products.

Time will tell, for just under £4 total purchase I'm not going to be too upset if they don't turn up and I'm also confident Amazon will refund as necessary.

Well they're £7 for the IR and £6.50 for the calipers so I guess they've been inundated with orders that they pushed up the price.

Or that old batch was off the back of a lorry and we're actually funding the Chinese mafia.

Probably wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them though.

It's the same for many people in 'that kind of business'.
Polite, often more then normal, usually a good bit of honor and loyalty, but you really don't want to get on their bad side by not paying them the same respect.

The whole thing works on 'face', disrespect that and cause them to lose it, you will suffer.

There's a guy who lives a couple of hundred yards from me who is allegedly rather heavily involved and has been 'exposed' a few times on telly here in the UK. He's a lovely bloke. His kids are lovely as well.

Anyway, calipers and thermometers not arrived yet.

The question is how long to wait before reporting the non delivery to Amazon? My order was supposedly dispatched on 18 August with an expected delivery date of 23 September.

The tracking number I received also seems to have been bogus.

Using the Amazon tools I asked for a response from the seller, none came after 3 days, so I filed a claim with Amazon this evening and was reimbursed my £1.94 within 10 minutes.

Both claims reimbursed by seller or Amazon.

This is not so much about the money, I may be of limited means but I can take a £4 hit, however, if people write off even the small amounts it means Amazon don't ever examine the small frauds which can, as discussed, rapidly accrue large amounts of revenue for the fraudsters.

Amazon do indeed investigate these and terminate sellers. I got one killed off a couple of years back. The problem is that it's playing whack a mole. If you look at your average chinese crap shifter they have several store fronts across aliexpress, ebay, amazon etc and pop up with new trading names every 5 minutes. Granted most of them are pretty good and want to really impress people with their business but much as the rest of the human race, there are a few turds.

In this case I doubt they even had the cash out of amazon before they were refunded. Sellers have to wait quite a while.
