Wanted: GPIB IEEE-488 connector
« on: July 09, 2018, 01:20:58 pm »
Looking for female IEEE-488 connector in straight pin PCB mount through hole version (like see att.)
Unfortunately these plugs seem to be hard to find in Germany.

Does anyone want to sell some or know a source?

2 year ago Conrad offere 24 pin male & femal centronics connectors for pcb mounting. But I checked. Now Conrad seems to offer the for cable soldering only. Never the less it may worth to give them a call and ask (supplier is ASSMANN)
At least Mouser offers them. They ships to Germany:

https://www.mouser.de/datasheet/2/296/111-YYY-213L001-57340.pdf
Mouser also offers other variants:

thanks for your reply
I just had a look at the datasheet and the dimensions look similar to GPIB, but I am not sure if these Centronics 24pin connectors will work, as they are for printer connections.

Does anyone know if they are compatible to GPIB?
If yes, it should be possible to modify them and use the screws from the old GBIP connectors.

Nevertheless, I would much prefer to get real IEEE-488 connectors

Thats a typical misunderstanding.
Centronics is not an alternative name of a printer connector, the printer connector is pin D-Sub Standard CENTRONICS type
(like SCSI, like GPIB and other like the Fluke 3330B digital control port).
That's also why centronicx type connectors are offered with different pin counts 14, 24, 36, 50)

Mouser does have the actual Amphenol 24 pins micro-ribbon connector:

https://www.mouser.fr/ProductDetail/Amphenol-Commercial-Products/57-20240?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvd2mIcYG7oaLRfb4aoXwigGK6C0N%252bdJ3Q%3d

Regarding the centronics connector, are you guys sure they are compatible?
Have you done a test?

If so, that would be interesting, because Mouser only carries a few Amphenol 24 pins connectors.
In particular, only "straight" soldered connectors.

AFAIK, the connector itself is identical between a standard 24-pin centronics and GPIB/IEEE-488, but it has locking screws instead of the little metal clips. The connectors available at Mouser, digikey etc. seem to have either thru-holes or UNC 4-40 or 6-32 threads, but not the little standoffs that are needed as counterpart for the jackscrews on the cable. I think they are supposed to have UNC 6-32 external threads to mount into the PCB connector, and M3.5 internal thread for the cable side jackscrews.

thanks for all replies

What I am looking for is a straight through hole type GPIB connector.
Unfortunately all the above mentioned sugestions seem to be not working as a direct replacement.

Have you tried:

http://www.l-com.com/ieee-488-gpib-female-ieee-488-connector-straight-pc-terminals

It's expensive!
They do have angled connectors with PCB connection.

yes, I know this one as I had attached exactly the CIB24SPC  datasheet of this product
But as far as I found out so far this product is not available in Germany/Europe

Have you asked? They have a few distributors across Europe.

Newark has them. I like to use OemSecrets for this kind of search, look here:

just found

https://www.arrow.com/en/products/57-20240-23/amphenol

according to the att. datasheet, they look like they should fit

I have just created an Arrow account but I do not see any shipping details (about cost and leadtime to Germany).
Does anyone in Europe/Germany have experience with Arrow and can share information?

Amphenol originally developed the Blue-Ribbon connector.
Available in several sizes including the 24-pin version.
Exactly the same connector was selected by printer maker Centronics with the wire-bail mechanical fastener.
And exactly the same connector was selected by HP for their HPIB but with screw turret fasteners.
And HP developed the stackable version to allow daisy-chained multiple connections.
The proprietary (although documented) HPIB was morphed into the open-source GPIB.
It appears that the HPIB/GPIB standard forked off with the perpetual argument over metric vs. inch screws.

Shipping to Germany is for free. There are no known problems ordering parts from Arrow to Germany.
