WANTED - Rack frame L sections, Sydney
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:45:52 am »
Does anyone in Sydney have some unwanted vertical struts from equipment racks? I'm after the simple L-section stuff, like in the photo. (Except longer of course. That's an offcut from a previous rack-hack.)
Can pick up, will buy so long as it's cheapish.
Just now I need a couple of meters of it, to make a small open-frame mount for some gear on my workbench.
And in general I'd like to keep some of this in stock, for other projects. But I can't find where to buy plain lengths of it at all, let alone cheaply/surplus. A local equipment rack outlet (Rack server heaven, Condell Park) has vanished, probably went bust.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a rack systems outlet in the Sth Sydney area? Who hopefully may have some damaged/scrapped racks they'd sell parts from. Or better yet, give away.

So, here's how it turned out:

That will be updated when the power strip and other frills are done.

I must think about racks myself.  Seems like a good solution to my cluttered bench.

Interesting log page(s).  Thanks for sharing.

I know you have found what you needed and made the rack (which looks quite neat), for those in the future looking for the rack strip, this might be suitable.

I know Altronics isn't as well known over in the Eastern states, but it might come in use for someone. I don't know if this is classes as "too expensive" as I am not sure what price you pay for them elsewhere.

I generally get most of our racks and accessories from Radum down here in Melbourne and if TerraHertz was stuck without any alternative and as a last resort didn't really want to make them then I could have arranged to have some sent up, but for just a couple of rails it probably wouldn't have been worth it really.

That's the first time I've ever seen rack rail with the tween-holes missing. They are _usually_ not used, except by single-U high panels that have one mounting hole on the centerline. In which case they are essential. Also for non-standard/improvised brackets, sometimes.

But a worse problem I can see with those, is the side angle depth isn't enough to prevent buckling over the meter length. It would have to be bolted to something stronger at several points along its length.

My experience with racks is new ones are priced out of my range, while second hand ones are either raining down free, or pretty cheap - but in bursts. Usually when you don't need them.  I've been given several  (including the 2 short black welded ones), while the 2 tall ones I added more recently were $50 each from a nearby coms contracting company that was decommissioning some telecoms center, and had any number of them available on ebay. Abandoned ex-commercial buildings also tend to have assorted racks of various ages lying around, but that's another story. The gear such racks held is usually gone, and copper strippers take the wiring, but no one wants the steel racks. Not worth carting for the scrap steel, and tech-people who may want racks don't tend to also be into urbex. My problem was I just couldn't think of any such places at the moment.
