Sounds like a case for a Kickstarter crowd funded project?
Or in your case, Pozzible for Oz.

Dave.

I'd be interested about notch filter, provided a little bit better documentation. Either ready-made or PCB only. I have AP and dScope audio analyzers, so I can asses how good that is.  ;)

I would be interested but I'd like to have some idea of cost before committing...

OK, thanks to Google I now know what "Kickstarter" and "Pozible" are. Intetresting concept. On Pozible one guy seems to have >$19k for sticking RGB LEDs into a hoola hoop!  :o How many of these projects actually come to fruition in the end? Some seeem pretty ambitious, some completely stupid. Cast your net wide enough and it seems you can sell almost anything.

Err, you haven't been following Kickstarter then! (there is another recent thread on it).
Every kid in his garage is getting 6 or 7 digits for any idea they throw out there. 5 digits is practically guaranteed on Kickstarter for any flashing led board.
How about $313K for a micro on a board?
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digistump/digispark-the-tiny-arduino-enabled-usb-dev-board (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digistump/digispark-the-tiny-arduino-enabled-usb-dev-board)
An example of a simple bare board that met it's very modest funding target:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/671510748/superlf398-low-parts-count-sample-and-hold?ref=card (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/671510748/superlf398-low-parts-count-sample-and-hold?ref=card)

Pozzible is much less simply because it does not have the market presence and hype of Kickstarter.

How many actually deliver? Well, almost all of them are later than promised because so many underestimate how much time/effort it takes to manufacture stuff. And some completely fall through and deliver nothing after a year or two.
There is so much failure that Kickstarter have recently changed the rules to try and stop "pie-in-the-sky" ideas getting listed.

But if you need money up front, and effectively get "pre-sales", it's well worth considering.

Dave.

Thanks Glen! I'm in for one board. I'm in the USA. I would prefer plated through holes, solder mask two sides, and silk screen one side.

You may be underestimating your market based on low sampling frequency. Post an article in rec-audio-high-end and one in rec-audio-tech and see how many responses you get.

I posted it in a thread specific for ultra low distortion oscillators on DIYaudio.

I also posted this thread in the DIYaudio group buy forum:

Hopefully there will be more people interested in your oscillator.

Just put the quotation in the cart, and it will show the shipping. You can still abort.

As for the oscillator demand, I gues it will help to 'sell' it a bit more; where are the images of the PCB, a bill of materials, maybe a finished build cost estimate, technical specs such as power supply & consuimption. When you have all these things together, more people will be interested. Heck, even I might be ;D

Wow, that's a lot for shipping a board! The price for the boards is good though. It's less than what I can get here in the USA. Let's hope there's more interest in this board. How many do you have interested so far?

I think that $17 is the total cost with shipping [(298+50)/20=17.4].   ;)

Glen, there are 3 different surface mount version for the HEF4051. Which one did you use?
See the data sheet here:

Thanks.

Hi Glen, which trimpots did you use for this oscillator? Your BOM only says "trimpot", but there are many different kinds. Thanks.

Hi,

These ones:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=RT4646 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=RT4646)

There are other brands of the same thing. Just make sure to order the style with the three pins in line. There is one variation with the center pin (wiper) offset.

OK, thanks. I'm almost done with a Mouser project that has almost all the parts. Mouser doesn't carry Analog Devices so they don't have the AD8226.
Title: Re: Who would like an ultra-low distortion audio oscillator PCB?
Post by: dirkwright on November 04, 2012, 02:19:03 pm
Ok, I've created a project on Mouser.com:
https://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?State=EDIT&ProjectGUID=7cd544dd-57f5-43d2-9873-5945469b09e3 (https://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?State=EDIT&ProjectGUID=7cd544dd-57f5-43d2-9873-5945469b09e3)
Can you take a look to see if I got everything right? I know I'm missing the AD8226 (because Mouser doesn't carry Analog Devices). Also, there are no switches or other controls listed since I didn't know yet which ones to get. Otherwise, everything for the board should be there.

Will it run just as well on +/-12VDC instead of 15VDC? I'm thinking that I'd like to run it off of batteries and 12VDC is more convenient than 15VDC.

Yes Glen, I got your board up and running! Thanks so much! I made one small mistake that was gratefully not fatal. Once corrected, it runs great but I have not had the time to tune it up yet.

Hi all,

My first post on this forum.

Suppose I'm one of the two who has reported a working oscillator. I bought two PCB's, one for myself (ready two months ago) and one for a friend. The latter got fired up and tested OK just two hours ago. I can now confirm that one more (third?) oscillator is up and running.

Glen, many thanks for designing this oscillator and supplying PCB's.

Best Regards/ Anders

No better than -100dB HD and -120dB noise floor. My current sound card setup is not sufficient for measuring this oscillator. I could implement a notch but first I will rework my test setup.

I would like to build Glens ultra-low distortion audio oscillator (including the line driver part). It's for personal use (hobby).
Does anyone have the gerber files available?
I tried to contact Glen, but can't get through :-(

Maybe a bit less fun, but I can fully recommend this guy boards:

Maybe a bit less fun, but I can fully recommend this guy boards:
Distortion figure is excellent, but indeed (much) less fun. Only one frequency per board available and as far as I could see the guy has only two frequencies in his portfolio.
Glen's version has 12 frequencies spread over the audio spectrum.

@DanNorman: I could not find them, therefore my appeal in this threat. If you catch them, please drop me a line.

Yes, only a couple of frequency's available from this guy. I think it depends what your actual use is. In my case, I use it as a reference to challenge my audio measurement system (pc with good qualitiy sound card). By having an ultra low distorsion generator I can check how much distorsion in introduced by the measumenet system itself (at a single frequency of course...)

If you want many frequencys and DIY, I would built a good quality DAC board with optical digital input and power this board from an isolated power supply. Test signals I would generate with one of the many audio measurement softwares available for free (I presume you pc has a digital out, otherwise you will need an additional sound card).

If you want an analyzer also, just build an ADC board the same way. By using the optical digital out/in and isolated power supplies (seperate power supply for DAC and ADC), you avoid ground loop issues when connecting to the DUT. Don't forget to install some input protection on the ADC if you want to test amplifiers also.

For an isolator power supply, these look like a very good deal: http://www.mouser.be/new/murata/murata-ps-nxe1/ (http://www.mouser.be/new/murata/murata-ps-nxe1/)

Hi Wim,

Thanks for thinking out loud. To be honest, I am more in for analog circuits. Easier to understand and also more fun to build (for me anyway).

I want to build a good sine wave oscillator with multiple frequencies in the audio range (up to 100kHz) and a THD meter to judge audio equipment.
Bob Cordells project is a nice one, certainly with the PCB's that Guiliano designed. Slightly better is the design of Glen, but then it would be nice to have the gerbers. Still browsing for them.

There is a lot to read and learn on the net. And I'm not in a hurry.

Best regards,

Rob.
