WTB [EU] Fume extrator (BVX or similar)
« on: November 01, 2017, 03:54:00 pm »
Hi,

Im looking for a good fume extractor. Something along the lines of a Metcal/Oki BVX-201 or similar. If you have anything please send me a PM.

Found 2 on eBay, but shipping from US/CA is apparently expensive (>200 USD) and they don't want to ship :wtf:.

Thanks!

Fumes extractors trend to be very expensive for the function they do.
I'm bulding one myself and it already took me more than 400EUR but less than 500EUR with only quality parts and control board designed by me.
I start to belive if buy one premade even if expensive will more cost/time effective ;)

Yeah I noticed  |O

I was already thinking of just buying the filter (~ 100 USD) from Metcal, a fan (??) and do a box myself. A silly suction tube ~ 100 USD, thats what? just a bit of plastic. Didn't look it was made out of gold! Certainly a cash-cow. I only don't like grass :P

As I said in another thread, I can't ventilate it outside. I don't mind doing this stuff DYI style, but this is something I'm not taking lightly. Major problem is how do you check/compare the filter efficiency? I really don't like to f*ck around with my health. Stopped smoking 25 yr. and I have no intention to smoke some flux  :-DD

Which parts did you use if i may ask?

ERSA have a good filter that you can buy spare and is square, good for DIY box.

My setup is made of:
1 powerfull motor with speed control (maybe overkill but lot of suck power and can be controlled): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-Inline-Duct-Fan-w-Speed-Controller-Exhaust-Blower-Fume-Underground-EC-Motor/182683185752
Cooker Hood Round replaces EFF54 Charcoal Carbon Filter 232mm x 30mm x 1 -- Cheap but good, you can use two or buy the ERSA 0CA10-1001
Pre filter: Universal Cooker Hood Extractor Fan Grease Dirt Filter Cut To Size Fit 47 x 57cm
Air Vent Circular Grille Cover Ventilation Grill High Quality ASA Plastic White
2 1/2" Clear Hose - 3 Metres
PU Flexible Ducting Hose - Ventilation, Fume&Dust Extraction, Woodworking (Connect from motor to exit air vent)
Everbuild pinkgrip grab adhesive 350ml cartridge
STAINLESS STEEL HOSE CLIPS, PIPE CLAMPS, WORM DRIVE *All Sizes on MM and INCH*
Some wood cut at size
3D Printed Hose Adaptor
VocLine head
Control board and electronics

The workflow: Smoke goes into head (i will place a carbon filter on head just to stop components or screws to be sucked) -> pass the tubes to the box -> pass the pre filter and then the filter -> gets to motor and ventilated out.
With this amount of filters air will come clean, but i will test too. If simple FA400 works, this will work too  :D
Also i have a air purifier (Xiaomi Air Purifier 2), it work very well for clean the air in a room!!
I will have temp, humidity, pressure and air quality sensors inside box

Is not finished yet, but when i finish everything i will creat a post and show.
So far you can see my progress here:

Box will be sealed with "Everbuild pinkgrip grab adhesive 350ml cartridge", removable parts will be screwed against isolation tape

(See from bottom to top)

If you have a smaller motor you can make a 3D printed case easy and cheap

PS: You do well to take care, some years ago my father got lung cancer and he never smoke, but always work with solder without any protection, medics never found the cause, but imo it was from his job and from many years (repairs, solder smokes). Doctors gave him a 3 month of remaining life because radioactive treatments and all other things was failling, somehow he survived, and cancer gone without any intervention. He grab the life with all his force and prey a lot to not let us alone without any income. Doctors can't belive and tests was repeated two times and for thier suprise he was clean.
So never discard the safety if you wana life. Smokes are bad to eyes too.

If you want a poor's man fume extractor, you can use a bathroom vent fan, a cardboard box and a filter with active carbon like this:  :-DD

It's cheap, under $20.
I know I'm numskull, but I look around me and I feel better.

Just sold 2 BVX201 kits, got one of these though:

Probably overkill, it’s a big thing and over your budget.

The BVX201 kits are very nice even at full price, very quiet.

I'm happy with, but never used a professional one for comparison.

It is much better than all the other DIY fume extractors based on CPU fans.
Just before posting I was looking on youtube for BVX-201 and feel much better. Initially I thought that the professional ones would extract the fume from farther away, but all seems to be pretty close to the crime scene.
So, if it is close, my fume extractor works just fine.

If you have the window close it would be better to use a tube to get out the smoke. Not my case, so I used a VW Polo pollen filter with active carbon (~$4).  Be aware of the air filtering direction. With the station on 450 Celsius degrees, burning the solder, no fume escapes the box.

If you really wanna replicate BVX-201, you could use a fan like this:

and make the tubes + adaptors (I think you could use some from vacuum cleaners) and in this way also save bench space)
And it is 20+ times cheaper :)

I know I'm numskull, but I look around me and I feel better.

The cheap you can get i think is the Quick fume extractor about 600 EUR i think. I don't know how it perform.
ERSA fume extractor can extract with long tubes (2m) or more.
There also an small kit on eBay from Korea that works well for litle as 400EUR

For me is important to have the tubes because i work under a microscope, big devices in front of me will not fit under it

Cheaper than that eBay one you linked to. A lot cheaper in fact, but they were part of a much larger sale so the buyer got a very good price. I’ve listed them for sale on here before but nobody was interested.

I don't know if this is any help but there's a bvx-100 listed on eBay at the minute. No affiliation or connection
