WTB: buying oscilloscope and dual bench power supply
« on: January 13, 2018, 12:19:46 pm »
I want to do eurorack modular synth audio stuff, so any dual bench power supply that can do +15V and -15V should do.
As for the scope, following Pitsrek's suggestion, something at least 50Mhz bandwidth.

I'm looking for cheap used stuff.
I have no idea about the price for what I'm looking for, so feel free to tell me what the prices should be.
If you can sell me both it's even better, as I assume shipping will cost a bit less.

I'm in Italy, so calculate shipping costs accordingly.

As for the scope, since I want to do audio stuff (everything is way below 1Mhz), any scope should work.
That's not true. You need something reasonably fast to see if your stuff is working alright. What if your amps oscillate? It's slightly warmer, but not much, the sound is a bit strange, and yet on your scope it's clean.....
Personally I would not go below 50Mhz even for "getting into audio hobby".

Thanks for the advice. I have bumped the price point to 50-100€. Could you perhaps give some suggestions regarding the prices, since I'm pretty clueless about that?

There are two takes on audio: if you need to inspect fidelity, a high quality PC sound card will beat any digital oscilloscope due to the much increased resolution (24 bits versus 8 bits typical for standalone oscilloscopes). For error or harmonics troubleshooting, the higher bandwidth will be useful.
If you are looking for a Digital Oscilloscope in a very small budget, an older Rigol DS1052E is a good entry point and may fit your pocket.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

For serious audio work you will need a bench power supply capable of -24 and +24 V.
The good old 5534 can be operated at +/-19 V. Or think of power output stages.
+48 V is also need for phantom powering micamps.

I'm going to edit the OP, specifying that I want to do eurorack modular synth stuff. As far as I understand, the power supplies for that are 12V. As for the fidelity, I do have a 192khz 24bit 4in soundcard to inspect the final output.

Feel free to keep the advice coming; I'm just now learning the basics, so you might make me avoid buying mistakes!
