I picked up a MiniPro TL866CS of the 'bay for around USD$50 shipped, and separately, an assortment of adapter sockets for various SOIC and QFP packages, for another $20 or so.

So far it has read and programmed everything I have thrown at it, including decades-old EPROMs and an equally ancent PIC 16C55 (parallel programmed, not serial like modern PICs). I've also used it with serial and parallel EEPROMs and FLASH, read and written NVSRAM, and tested SRAMs and logic ICs. I have a limited budget for my hobby, and this is some of the best money I have spent in a long while.

I found a part the MiniPro TL866 won't do.  The Xicor XR2212 nvram.. that or is there a device file available somewhere I don't know about?
