WTB Tektronix A6302 // search for current probe ended
« on: June 30, 2015, 07:41:21 am »
I am looking for a working and in good condition Tektronix A6302 current probe.
Working probes on  eBay are too expensive for me.

Update 8 October 2015.

Bought a Tektronix A6302 on eBay from an English seller for 216 Euro including shipping,  its in nearly pristine condition.
Thank you everyone  for contributing.

Good luck on that! I sold the last one that I had for $650.  I suggest that you look at some of their older current probes. They sell for a lot less. The P6021 doesn't require a special unit to plug into, only a small adapter box, so it can be used with a scope.  It all depends on frequency and current range you NEED.  OR add a current sense resistor to your circuit and measure the voltage across it.

What currents at what frequencies do you want to measure?
May be there are alternatives.
The A6302 is always selling for good money, if it is in a good working condition

Thanks for the replies, I want to extent to current measure capabilities of the Tektronix equipment i already have.
I want a current probe for measuring power supply projects, lets say from DC to a maximum power supply switching frequency of 1 MHz at 10A.

So far i got two AM502, one TM503, and one P6303

I am not willing to spend a lot of money on these old A6302, might as well go for the Agilent 1147B ( when I win the lottery or get really desperate ).

You can also look at the Tektronix A622 current probe.
For many applications this one is perfect, but it goes only to 100 kHz
This probe is also offered by many other manufacturers and sometimes you get lucky and find them for a very low price.

Yes, the Agilent 1147B is my dream current probe as well.
But they never show up anywhere or the price is far too high.

I think there are more people searching for a currentprobe as there are people selling them. And the good ones sell not cheap.

I have a P6016 with amplifier I bought a few years ago for something like 80 euro's as part of a bunch Tek probes. But my most used is a P6042. I had the amplifier for free. There a many that lost the probe. I bought a AM503(?) probe for 2,50 euro from a swedisch guy. The probe was not within specs while calibrating and they replaced it. They wanted to trash the old probe. That is no problem for a P6042 because the amp is made and matched for one probe. So I did that for this probe. But it was a lot of work because my amp missed some electronics too. (like most transistors) So I do not know if it is easy on a good P6042.

@ HighVoltage.

Found two on eBay the cheapest for only 1700 Euro ex VAT and duties, for 2080 Euro ex VAT I can get a new one from Farnell.

@ PA4TIM

Agree, its clearly driven by supply and demand, for now I am quite happy with my P6303.
The P6042 is on eBay also very expensive and is not based on a modular concept.

Yeah, never saw a P6042 sell for less than a three figure number (eBay, world wide). But these are very good probes, especially since they can measure down to DC.

I have pristine condition A6302 probes as my lab spares, they have not been abused or dropped (usually breaks ferro cores).  If you're  interested I will sell one for no less than $350.00 US plus shipping.  I buy a few things from TopLoser so if you need references of my integrity feel free to ask.

Who actually makes current probes ?

There are a couple of types of hall-effect probes good from DC to 100kHz that look identical from Fluke, Tektronix and several other less well-known makes. Another design that I've seen from both F W Bell and Fluke.

There must be some company that's the real source of all these.

Who actually makes current probes ?

Low-bandwidth: quite a few, notably LEM if you want quality. These are common because lots of industrial control stuff needs 'em.
High-bandwidth: Tek, LeCroy, Hagisight. In the past there were some Tek rebrands, notably Philips (PM9355).

I'm pretty sure Tek were the first with the DC-to-dozens-MHz probes. They probably manufacture them still themselves, even today. Also I don't think that there was much competition in that field until lately (patents?).

You are probably referring to this one:

Or the similar one with BNC connector.

I think they are all made by AEMC
Even the one in white color, Agilent branded one is made by AEMC

Thank you for the offer, but its too expensive,  to get the probe in my hands would cost me more than 450 Euro, due to taxes etc.

It is the requirement for it to be working that is the problem! Mine all work on AC, but not DC.

The Fluke Y8100 will go from DC to 1kHz.

The P6021 will work with a through 50 ohm terminator, but at some uncalibrated sensitivity. In fact the lower the load impedance the lowere the frequency it will work to, but watch for saturation!

I do have an Agilent 1147 for sale, which I do not really need. Just make an offer, no lottery needed. Looks pretty unused, but not in original packaging.
