5 hours in the lab today...
« on: October 27, 2011, 04:21:42 pm »
...trying to work out a relatively simple 3rd-order state space representation from first principles only to hit a brick wall again and again and again. Then on the 10 minute bus ride home it hit me.

Now, I'm trying to figure out how to punish myself for being such an idiot. :-\

Well, I don't give any comments on sexual preferences......:D

....No Honestly, I think everyone has that from time to time. I think it's more a problem that you force yourself to find a quick solution soon and think what to do and if it works. So you get used to a schematic that runs through your brain. If the solution is a bit apart from that you won't find it because you fix on another thing.
Don't know how often I thought "Well, why didn't I try that early.....quite obvious".

If you really want to punish yourself I would suggest a warm instead an ice cold beer after work ;)

brain will process better when its defragmented, ie rest, so dont overlook it. when everything you do giving you bad result, then you should know what to do. ;)

Sometimes a solution will be visible in few moments if you learn to think "out of the box"

If I'm stuck at something, I put on some relaxing music and close my eyes to think it through. (Well, that's what I tell my boss.  ;D)

Is it for a Kalman filter?

I general, yes, but this was one of those situations where deviating from a clearly defined basis would result in a convoluted disaster of sorts.

Is it for a Kalman filter?

No, it was purely academic in nature. Although Prof. Kalman was once faculty at my university. ;) Too bad I won't have an opportunity to learn state variable methods at the graduate level from one of his PhD students (Prof. Pramod Khargonekar, who is current faculty and former dean of our College of Engineering).

Beyond the first paragraph, you'll need a strong background in differential equations, linear algebra, and upper-division electrical engineering fundamentals with respect to control theory and signals/systems. Tread with caution.

In other words,it is a design tool, like every other design tool! :)
