Amazon Free Trial Scam?

On June 11 an email from Amazon was received announcing "Free Trial of Amazon Prime". I only glanced at it as I was not really interested. I didn't delete it, but pretty much forgot all about it. Today I got my credit card bill and saw a charge from Amazon for $127.33 for Amazon Prime Membership. WTF?

Your Amazon Prime membership will continue after your free trial until cancelled. If you do not wish to continue your membership for $119.00/year plus any applicable taxes, you may cancel anytime by visiting Your Account and adjusting your membership settings.

I'm not really sure how this is legal. The "Free Trial" was completely unsolicited. I did not ask for it.

I went to Amazon and after logging in and some clicking around I found a "digital order" for Amazon Prime which I did not place. A little more clicking and I was able to cancel the membership and supposedly will receive a refund of $127.33

I'll be checking next month's credit card bill carefully.

Edit: I've been trying to remember If I might have actually requested a free trial, but I don't believe I did. I guess I'll give them the benefit of doubt though. At any rate, I apparently will receive a full refund according to an email I just got.

Could you have selected Prime delivery for some item without really looking at what you're clicking? That would turn it on and is easily done, but in that case I wouldn't expect the note from them to say you hadn't used any Prime benefits. (But maybe they mean you haven't used any outside the free trial).

I've just about convinced myself that I must have somehow signed up for it without realizing it, or did it intentionally and just don't remember. That's the only thing that makes sense.
