Thank you.

I did that and it rips ok. The same error happens when I try to write though.

If you used fresh mediums, maybe they are not the right kind or poor quality (try other brands), or your burner isn't a burner or defective.

Good luck.

I'm a bit too cowardly to use some of the more "windowsy" methods (registry stuff, etc.) but I had a thought: if I get some DVD burning software and install it, will that solve it?

My vote goes for Imgburn as well, although Symantec showed the original download contains Opencandy.
The one in the Majorgeeks website does not
https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/imgburn.html

It works well on my Windows 10 professional

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

No. If Windows Media Player doesn't burn, other software can't do also.

Frankly said, i belive, something is wrong with your burner itself.
An other burner SATA 5.25" isn't too expensive, or use one temporarely from an other computer to verify it through the exclusion procedure. There are two plugged cables at the burners back which you can easily attach to the temporarely replacement device that you just put next to the open case.
That would be your next step.

Edit: An other idea is, to delete the dvd-driver completely from the device manager. After that, there should be an unknown device, that will ask you to reinstall. Don't take it from your computer again, take the new one online. This procedure asks you for that.

Good luck.

Thank you.

I don't like to mess inside the PC. How about if I get a cheap USB DVD player?

Take it apart, that's the motto of EEVBLOG.  ;)

But usb-writer is also a good idea, if you know that fixes the problem, which you still don't know exactly. But on the other hand it's not so elegant not to have replaced the defective one next to it.  ::)  ;)

A decent quality one shouldn't cost much.

The last time I bought an internal optical disk drive was 2008. I still use it occasionally, but most of the time I use a Samsung portable DVD writer I got for $30 from Newegg. Since I don't need an optical drive that often, it's easier and simpler to have just one drive that I can move from machine to machine as needed. These days it spends most of its time in the box it came in though.

Cheers both.

I would take it apart if it wasn't so new-ish.

One last question:

if I uninstall/reinstall IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers [on Device Manager the item is: Intel(R) 100 Series/C230 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller],

this will not affect the hard drives will it?

  :palm:
Why would you want to do that??  :o
Don't touch it, if you don't want to ruin your booting ability.
AHCI settings corresponds with your BIOS-settings and is absolute necessary for your momentan installed system.
Yes, someone can reinstall the SATA AHCI driver in the running system, but then you should absolutely know, what you are doing here. If you ask "this will not affect the hard drives, will it?", then you don't know!

Right, thank you. Some said this was something to uninstall and then reboot like with the DVD itself.

I will not touch it!

Another possibility might be using a LiveCD Linux distribution.

You could try a Linux Mint or Ubuntu LiveCD. Another one I've used a lot in the past is called the SystemRescueCD. I can't say definitely if it has the burning tools on it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. You could mount your Windows partition to access the *.iso you want to burn.

cheers, Nick

Newish Computer..
What machine are u using..Brand, model no.??
o just post  a screen short of the About the computer.( Mac/Linux/Windows all have their own way of showing that info)

I like the Linux LiveCD method, only why not just copy the music on a USB thumb drive an then use another computer to do the burn to CD..or take to a friend's
Hack go to a cafe, and ask someone tapping away on their laptop to quickly burn the music to a CD that you bring. Buy her a doughnut or something...

What do you want as the final item? A CD with the music on it? I have had CDs that just do not like the CD?DVD burner and had to use another brand. This happens.

Once you copy to a thumb drive. just grab some CDs and go find another machine.

Hi,

Details:
machine: Dell Inspiron 3668
processor: Intel Core i5-7400 @ 3.00GHz
RAM: 8Gb
system type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Windows: 10 Pro
Win version: 1803
OS Build: 17134.590

It's just that I want to be able to use the drive that I paid for. I do use more sensible devices for music, back-ups, etc.

One thing I noticed is that on my laptop (Windows 8.1) under [Device Manager:IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers] it has "ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1".
My Inspiron (the problem one) does not have these two items.

Is this significant?

Why are you looking so unstructured into the blue? With such questions you can and we can hardly help you with the best will in the world. Work through the suggestions first, please.

Edit: My suggestion, - and others - was, see on the  burner first.

Thanks all very much.

I tried everything suggested but to no avail.  |O

In the end, I gave up and bought an external drive: I can burn now so all is well; though I do feel that I cheated.  :-[
