Auction outfit in Canberra
« on: November 21, 2018, 08:55:39 am »
I recently learned of an auctions outfit in Canberra.  https://www.allbids.com.au

It's a 'consignment' auction house. Looks like sometimes they sell interesting tech stuff. Although it suffers from:
  * Being in equipment-starved Oz, so prices are ridiculous.
  * Their categories tree structure is not tech-aware. Typical.
  * Has that 'bids extend the auction close by 5 minutes' annoying feature, that makes snipe bidding nearly useless.
  * 22.5% 'buyer's premium' + GST ... are they kidding?
  * You can't save the full size item pictures, even if you won it. Screenshot of small size image or nothing. Whyyyy?

20181122 Edit to add:
 * Finished items get removed from your watch list ONE DAY after end of bids. So better save a link. It remains to be seen how long they'll retain old listings, but so far the links below still work.

A few recent items:

https://www.allbids.com.au/c/office-business/scientific-instruments/hp-8563a-spectrum-analyzer-50hz-265ghz-1013534    Sigh...
https://www.allbids.com.au/c/office-business/scientific-instruments/hp-8981a-vector-modulation-analyzer-1013547

All way out of my price range, sob..  But I did get one thing at a decent price that I wanted:

So, another time-sucking auction site to watch.

Or use Firefox, click on the preview picture to go to the large view, then hold the shift key while right-clicking. This will open the context menu (which is otherwise supressed) to copy the link, save the image etc.

Ah ha, thanks. I did not know about that one. Works!  Or Ctrl-Shift-Printscreen.
As for digging in the source code, I do that fairly often but that site's code confuses me.

It still counts as a negative against the site, that they would attempt to inhibit save of images.

I use the Imagus plugin which shows the image full size when you hover, then simply right click save as. 2500pix wide image saved

Yeah $3565 + shipping for the Spectrum Analyser... sigh here too. (although shipping looks reasonable)
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.
