awesome soldering iron demo.
« on: December 07, 2012, 05:50:26 pm »
I've been  |O for a decent iron that will solder heat sinks to ground planes.
found this video demo, check this out for awesome heat maintenance.

I would say heat 'recovery' but , recovery is for an iron that cant take a beating.

This one seems to just stay hot.

what do you think?

That's because their temperature control is set very aggressively.
Notice the large overshoot in temperature after the thermal load is removed?

I'd say this is fairly equal to my Ersa i-Con stations.

Looks like the temp is set to 400+'C, that's the element temperature, looking at the size of the bit, very small thermal mass. Your probably assuming it's cold water, maybe just below boiling, will never know, heat loss may just be from the very tip, it's hard to see how far into the water ( if it is water ) the tip is being inserted.

Try this for how much a tip can drop when placed on a wet cleaning sponge

That's probably got to do with the recovery time of his station due to many parameters (HW/FW)
My station recovers quite quickly and well ... his DIY station is really slow

How do you know?

Have you a separate sensor in the very very tip of your iron.

thanks mr.smiley

The other day a bought a 60w soldering iron, I would dip the tip on a wet sponge and i could then place the tip on my finger!! Yet the temperature would say 450 degrees C
this is why my heat sinks on a ground plane were near impossible to solder ( unless i heat the board in the oven for 10 mins but then its hot to handle.)

someone on eevblog pointed this iron out a 'quick 203h'

http://www.mrtechservices.co.uk/product.php/31/29/quick_203h_90w_digital_soldering_station

it claims to have its sensor near the tip , no one else seems to claim this!

surly this is one of the most important aspects of an iron? more than wattage?

so my thoughts now are to either buy a

150watt  xytronic - usa   soldering station

or

90watt quick 203h with the sensor near the tip?

people say weller are the best ? i wonder where a weller sensor is?

lots for me to google .  lol.   :)

Leidenfrost Effect significantly slows the cooling of the iron tip. Kind of like dipping a finger in cryogenic liquids. I quick dip doesn't reduce a persons ability to count.

No, but if that person reaches 9 using his fingers, the shaking with excitement at getting that high might just stop him reaching 10.  :-DD

If you dip your soldering iron on a sponge and it drops 100°C then there are a few possible problems:

-Shit soldering iron
-Sponge is soaking wet and not damp as it should be
-shit control loop
-super tiny tip with low wattage iron

The guy in the video link i posted had drilled the very tip of his bit and inserted a thermocouple probe. This was to compare the core heater temperature response to external factors, ie the wet sponge.

Actually, I option #1 pretty much covers it!

I have a Weller WESD51 for general board soldering and a vintage Weller WTCPN Soldering Station for most larger jobs.  Not easy to find one station that will do everything correctly.  I sometimes even use a Weller 150/200 watt gun for big stuff like soldering directly to a chassis. The old Weller WTCPN station is used the most but that's due to the fact that I work on mostly vintage equipment.  These newer little stations are nice for board and surface mount work but really don't have the balls needed when it comes to the larger jobs on older equipment.

Yeah i know,I got lucky and scored a NOS one off of ebay for $220 au,Tell you what though after one day of use i could never go back to a chinese hakko type station even if i had to pay full price i wouldnt care,I find myself enjoying boardwork instead of it being the labourous task it once was.

I have a JBC station and yes, it is that good. Check out my video of a 32mm wide tip at only 260degC

cool video , nice to actually see these things in action.

Only $384.00 from Janel if you are in the US.  Trust me, worth every penny if its in your budget.
This is the one I used in the video wide tip was not included.  Watch the tip change video and the time for the tip to get to temp.

How do you know?
I don't even need a thermometer i judge the speed at which my 63/37 solder melts, like it melts at roughly the same pace after 2-3secs not 10secs!

Check ebay.

I've seen the older version of the station + tip go for around £50 on UK ebay. I paid more than that for mine but it was still less than half the UK price of a Hakko + tip.

I bought a Weller flatpack tip once, great time saver, even if the price in 1990 was $100.
