I am currently having trouble getting X11 to work right on FreeBSD. I am not a complete noob at this, but I am not as seasoned as other might be, so I am obviously missing some stuff.
First off, I need to use the nVidia driver for my GTX 970. Various sources say to get it from different places, but pkg offers the nvidia-driver package, so I am assuming this is the best modern option. I have noticed this isn't loading the right kernel module, so this might not be working right, or I could have just done things out of order.
Second off, X11 doesn't work right no matter what I do. I try to generate a config using Xorg -configure, but it comes up with a cryptic error, something to do with a segmentation fault, error 11, whatever it's doing. This is on FreeBSD 11.1, by the way. This does generate a file, but seemingly without any option for video drivers or anything.
Trying to run startx generates various issues from, no screens present (usually when I try to use an automatically generated config) to cannot run in framebuffer mode (when I have no driver or generated config file that I know of).
What I am looking for is either someone to help me real time get this working, just for me to know how to do it in the future, or to point me to a modern, up to date, watertight guide for getting the XWS working on FreeBSD. Thanks in advance.
