Cheap chinese 20W LED that is actually good.
« on: October 19, 2016, 11:54:29 am »
A while ago i was looking for a 20W warm white LED and spotted some that looked a bit different than others.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321875269086?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&var=510820545744&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Today the led arrived.
And here it's running >1mA.

Looks like it's illuminating perfectly evenly, i'll be ordering more to see if they're all this good.

Thanks

What country eBay is this?

I think there is an interest in Chinese components, especially good ones.

I wonder why they have all these countries excluded.
You could try looking for other sellers that might have this style of LED, but no guarantees if they're the same quality.

Odd that they do but at least I can try and find something similar and take a gamble on the quality being as good and consistent.

Could I get 5 of these and a diode all in series, and then connect that straight to my 120V mains? Which diode would I need? Would I also need a current limiting resistor?

They probably had issues with customs from these countries...

Same heading and pic, in ebay Australia.
Maybe they are selling via local sales agents, hence the country restrictions? Or something to do with optimizing their postage cost vs item cost?

Incidentally, beware those 50W red LEDs. They are actually blue LED chips with red phosphor cover, and it doesn't work very well. See my experience here: http://everist.org/NobLog/20150628_LED_lighting_mk3.htm

Otoh, the 10W range of colored LEDs actually have the right color LED chips, with clear cover material. Only white uses a phosphor.

Directly connecting the LEDs to mains is a very bad idea, even with a diode for rectification you would never achieve constant current, which is needed to properly drive the LED.
LED power supplies are there for a reason.

There is some European law prohibiting the import of dangerous prducts (for example products without a CE marking). And because there are some dangerous LED lamps, they don't allow you to import anything with LED as the main component from China.
That started somewhere in 2015. Therefore most Chinese sellers now have stopped selling LEDs to Germany, because German customs follows the regulations a bit more strictly than other European countries.
