naming things "ardu-foo" or "foo-duino"
« on: April 30, 2019, 12:54:56 am »

What are the copyright implications of naming a project / product with parts of the Arduino name, like, say "Ardushovel" or "Shovelduino", if you incorporated an Atmega and some terrible spaced headers into a shovel? I mean, assuming that those names are not already in use. I'm really asking about incorporating parts of the familiar Arduino name into things.

And no, my project is not a shovel with blinky LEDs, but that was just the dumbest thing that came to mind in 10 seconds.

– Clones
A market developed for products we call Clones which are exact (or almost exact) replicas of Arduino boards with a different branding , i.e. they are usually named with some variation of Ardu-something or something-duino. These products are released according to trademark laws (unless they copy almost exactly our graphics which is not open-source) and have a place in the market.

Thanks. The thing I have in mind is more akin to a derivative, like Adafruit Flora, but it looks like they're fine with this. Excellent.

The name Arduino is itself taken from an Italian espresso machine.

As I recall the name came from a local drinking pub the original developers hung out at and they decided to use it's name.

I make a point of always being a step or two behind the times. I still have a blog.

More seriously, yeah, it's not the sexiest.

You can rename as time goes by. Don't forget to change capitalization. Say, you had ID2000, then you rename it to iDuino, and when this wears out, you rename it to IdIoT, and so on.
