Decapping integrated circuits
« on: September 20, 2018, 06:21:58 pm »
I would like to replace an  integrated circuit on a mainboard. A problem is that a manufacturer removed any text on the circuit. If I decap the circuit (in a nitric acid) I can see the inner circuits. Is it common a manufacturer put a model number on the wafer( inside of the circuit) or not?
Anyone knows?

Pretty common to have a number there along with manufacturer logo, though for some that is not too easy to transfer to a part number, but does give a good idea as to function.

It is actually very rare to see the actual part number on more or less complex parts. Usually you see a mask number, since the part number may change at any time on a whim of a marketing department.

Probably easier to identify from function, package, and pinout.

You can add more information and people here may give it a go.

There was a thread here some time back of someone acid etching/decapping ICs. If you could find that thread originator, could possibly shine some light on your question.
