Different types of capacitor - Application...
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:07:33 am »
I went to the electronic store at my workplace and found out there were many types of capacitor. Do you know any article or reference which highlights all or most of the capacitor variants and their applications? Thanks.

I second this.

It would be very handy if there was a reference for all capacitor types. Something that gave all their advantages/disadvantages/value ranges/temperature stability/ etc..
There also seem to be duplicate names for the same types of capacitors so knowing all the names would be handy, especially when trying to find a capacitor online.

I cant say i've ever seen this kind of reference.

I was going to start writing about what I know, but came up with this link rather quickly. It would be a good start:
http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/data/capacitor/capacitor_types.php

and of course, wikipedia, as much as I hate to cite that place:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_capacitor

Valve amplifiers from Morgan Jones has a nice section on many types.

Good EMC books also contain entire sections on capacitors (mostly ceramic).

i was thinking more a treeview with bullet points,  but that first URL isnt too bad.
Doesn't have all the cap types though,  somewhere around here i have a large component draw full of greencaps of different values. Can't say i ever use them.

yeah, that video was good, but it's hardly reference material for capacitor selection.
What would be nice is a sheet that can be used to find the best type of capacitor for the properties which are important in your design.
I'll probably gather all the data for all cap types and write one myself one of these days :P
I'll post it if i do

Forget about this "the best" junk. Every part selection is a compromise. Regarding ceramic capacitors:

You seem to have confused "best" with "perfect".

Found a link at the Wiki site showing the images of different capacitor types

No, this whining for "I want the best, nothing else but the best will do" is a very typical beginner's error. Either they overcome it and move or, or they forever waste time in their search for the best.
