When I saw you reply I thought something else.
Your toaster just set fire to an African child over TCP.

I never wanted to say it in public, but since you opened the door for us all - yes I love doing it. I do it whenever I have the urge. I do it anywhere I can. I wish I could do it more.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Edit: Here is a more intensive the questionnaire that the heatshrink fascination reminded me of.  The question I remembered was "Have you been fascinated about making traps?".  It is no longer there, but there are other "fascination" type questions that I think could be substituted with "heatshrink".

I scored a little above normal in the first one, just below borderline aspergers.  I have no particular fascination with heatshrink.

It is unbelievably satisfying....

Unless of course I, as usual, leave it too close to where I'm soldering and shrink the godd*#$*(# stupid #$*($ thing before I'm ready to.

Ah yes especially the ones with thermal adhesive inside, deliberately heated a bit to long to watch the glue ooze out...and that smell.....

Must go.

Now, if only you'd written that in the style of Dr Seuss.  :)

Have you ever shrunk it on a train? Have you ever shrunk it in the rain? Have you ever shrunk it in a cot? Have you ever shrunk it in a pot?

Heat shrink tubing ain't that bad - if you haven't shrunk it it's so sad!

Normally my fun happens before my tube shrinks.

No need to kick me out, I'm leaving.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

Do you still shrink it by yourself, or do you have a friend to help you?

The heating and shrinking of tubing is always better with a friend.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic; e.g., Cheez Whiz, Hot Dogs and RF.

Not when I used to use the generic stuff I picked up at Micro Center, but when I got some 3M tubing, well... that's a different story.  ;)

Sadly I do not have a friend to aide me in my inflating and then shrinking of long tubes, but maybe one day I will find the right person to assist me in this task.

Shame on you, introducing a note of normality----us weirdos were just starting to enjoy ourselves! :D

There are situations that I do not like it at all.
For instance when I am soldering short wires to a connector over which I would like to have some shrink tube for isolation only to find out it has already shrunk too much when I was soldering.
Now ofcourse the wires are packed in a cable so there is no chance to put the heatshrink over the wires after the soldering.
Then I have to choose: solder shortly and risk a lousy solderconnection or forget about the shrink tube. Aaaaaaaaah those situations are a nightmare  :scared: .

But for the rest it is nice shrinking it just as I love vacuum sealing food in my pro vacuum sealer with vacuum chamber, when the vacuum escapes the plastick bag shrinks around the product, magical sight.

The only thing I like about heat shrink tubing is the German word for it: Schrumpfschlauch

I tend to think about my hot-air station as a heat-shrinking device.

EDIT:
Also, apparently I'm borderline Asperger's, too. Thanks for the link, xygor.

Same with me. In fact, I suspect I use it more often for heat shrink tubing than soldering/desoldering with it.  :o  :-DD

Yup, hot-air stations are great for heat-shrinking. And I admit that I got about a dozen boxes of heat-shrink tubing in different sizes and colors. I can't do without them anymore :-DD

Aspergers runs higher than the general population among engineers.
Psychopathy runs higher than the general population among business executives and politicians.

Are those dozen boxes full of used or unused heatshrink tubing.  :-//

Unshrunk. It's hard, but I limit myself to just a few cm each day.  ;D

I suppose it's somewhat satisfying to shrink it.

What's incredibly aggravating, however, is making a multi conductor cable up and crimping the last terminal in place, THEN noticing that lone piece of shrink tubing that you forgot to install on one of them sitting forlornly on the bench staring back up at you.   |O |O |O |O

It is inevitably, of course, juuuuuuust a bit too small to slip over the already installed termination.   ::)   |O

Been there, done that, all too many times.  And if you triple check, somehow a piece will fall off or jump through a wormhole in the short time that passes between you verifying it's there and affixing the terminal.   :-//

-Pat
If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...
