Does the forum ban certain device (not an account) ?
« on: July 21, 2018, 06:32:46 pm »
All these years, since I joined this forum, I used to read and post at multiple devices with "logged in" state. I use desktops, laptops, smart phone (android) and tablets (IOS & Android), these varies from mine, SWMBO's or kid's gadgets whichever I grabbed one in my hand.

Recently I just acquired a new tablet running android 8.0 Oreo and had been using the built in browser Chrome to browse and logged in this forum without any problem.

Few days ago the new tablet suddenly got this message, even a guest ?  :-//

Then I thought may be its the Google Chrome's problem, delete all it's histories, cache, cookies and etc till its cleaned state, still not working.

As this is a new tablet, then I installed a fresh new Mozilla Firefox, did not browse anything and straight went to this forum main page, still not working.  :'(

Fyi, regarding network, above problems were tested on the same internet connection as this desktop as I'm posting this, hence my IP is not banned, and also tried using mobile data (different subnet/ISP) at the tablet, still same result.

Oh yes, I did logged out and logged in again in this desktop as I'm using now, just to make sure my account is fine.  :phew:

Also just few seconds ago I did try using my Android phone to browse and log in this forum, at the same connection as the tablet, its fine.

Any idea if this problem its at my side, or the server/forum's side (device ban) ?  :-//

Bans are not device based, are you sure your device is not using a VPN? or Mobile Data?

Can you please PM me the IP you get on the device when you visit http://www.whatsmyip.org/

Can it be the addon that has a record of known dodgy IP's and stops them, mobile connections are liable to this problem as they change often and a cookie left on the device might maintain the ban.

No, cookies are not related to the ban at all, it is all done per request based on IP, or login, or both. Since he can not view the forum as a guest it is likely using either mobile Data on a dodgy IP or the device is on a VPN that we have blacklisted.

Go to one of those "what is my IP" sites on each of the devices and compare.

My bet is on some VPN or similar proxy that is getting banned.

PM sent with all IPs details including the current desktop machine that I made this post and the tablet.

FYI, all my devices are behind wifi internet router connected to cable modem, not using any VPN or proxy server at all, all direct connection to internet provided by the ISP.

Also my android tablet is new and not rooted, modded, hacked at all, everything is standard as factory release.
