The text book they have handed us in college is a general purpose Probability and stat book. A lot of stuff that is not needed and doesn't really focus on the applications of probability and stat theory in the engineering field.

Even general purpose statistics can be applied to engineering! The text book seems to have been written by someone who did not use statistics in an engineering setting but it should not be hard to apply the examples to widgets being measured!

Think about bell curves, standard deviations etc as applied to a production run of 10K resistors.
You can do anything with the right attitude and a hammer.
