DSE Funway Into Electronics
« on: November 26, 2014, 05:55:34 am »
So, whom out there would recall this book?

Attempted to pick it up of late?

Almost imposable to find these days, but I got real lucky and picked up the first book at an op-shop, a 1993 printing, and for the life of me, I have to wonder if kids today would be allowed to make the beer powered radio.

So, I have a question, share your stories?

About what? Drinking beer while building electronics? I bet there are some stories there!

Like "Do not put the Friday afternoon keg on before 4th year Engineering students have finished their project work for the day"
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

Its a project splashed on the cover, of a radio powered by beer.

More importantly has anyone got a copy of The Funway Into Finding The DSE Funway Into Electronics, I just spent an hour searching the place and found every other book that I forgot I had except the ones you're after. Will continue the search tomorrow as there are another two boxes of books in the garage.

I wouldn't have chucked these out because they would have been a primary resource when I did the advanced certificate in electronics years ago at TAFE.        :-DD

lol
Well this was more of a topic, about the books themselves, I was kind of interested to see how many people used this book to get started in electronics, as for the volumes, I have volume one and two, however in this topic https://www.eevblog.com/forum/buysellwanted/wanted-funyway-into-electronics-volume-1-2-and-3/

I am asking if anybody has a few extras floating about, and willing to part with them. I am right now missing volume three, but I also was thinking that these would be good for the electronics class at my local hacker space is looking at running, that or as a guide to get new people into building circuits.
At the time of writing this reply, I had just gotten back from an open night and was showing a possible new member, little projects they could build to learn about electronics.

I think we are both in the same boat, lost in the fog and the compass is buggered.

I thought he was asking if anyone had 1,2 or 3 that they could send him, that was my intention providing that I still have them somewhere.

I had all 3 books as a kid growing up, and build every single project (and then some....)

Would love to read those books again for nostalgia.

Yea, too bad for me I didn't have it growing up, my parents where more on the stupid side, and still are. So I was never really exposed to things I should have been.

Built a few of the kids. From all three volumes.
It's what got me started in electronics. 8th Birthday present was the funway volume 2 that came with a soldering iron, fm bug, solder. There was one other but can't remember.

Yep, another one of those people who got started via the DSE "Fun Way" series in the 80's (and the Wizard and VZ200/300 computers).  Even went on to get a job at the local DSE store (have to say though, that was a shocker, nothing like what I anticipated still did it for a couple of years ).

I scour the local charity shops for interesting things.

Electronics/radio books and kits are high on my list.

They are very rare but occasionally I strike gold.

Like I did two days ago where I found a Funway 1 book and parts packaged up for $6.

Anyways here's a look at my haul and an attempt at one project.

If that is the wife's cleavage it is a wonder you have time to get into Funway into Electronics. Funway into something else maybe... :-DD
You might want to consider changing the photo :palm: .

Never seen that video before Peter. Excellent production. I know or have known a few of those blokes in the video. I still see Eugene every few weeks. I started with a Tandy 100-in-kit. I never got into Funway, but there was some innovation there for sure.

Most people have left hardware electronics over the years. I used to work at IBM where out of about 150 engineers in my workplace, up until recently there were only two of us left doing hardware design. The rest moved on into other fields; most of them non-technical. The other guy who was older than me recently retired. Sadly, I believe I am the only one left.

Just found this internal DSE staff training video on Funway into Electronics. 1986.

(Due to viewer interest/encouragement I'll be doing videos on assembly of some FW1 projects. A series will start soon so subscribe if you haven't already.)
