Dust free lab !
« on: July 30, 2018, 08:36:17 am »
I am just tired of cleaning dust build up in my lab. Every 10 or 15 days I have to clean and it takes around quarter of a day to clean everything. My lab is in an apartment 4th floor.

I was wondering if you are facing the same problem and how you are tacking the problem.

or any idea to make your lab dust free.

Try to identify the source of the dust.
Carpets? Aircon? Leaky window seals?
Dog? Cat? or any other hairy fellows?
Leaky door seals? One of the worst dust
sources is the bedroom. Keep that door
closed at all times. Fabric of chairs and sofas?
Just to give you an idea.

To keep something dust free you need to do four things:

1. Seal it.
2. Clean it.
3. Keep a positive filtered air flow through.
4. Clean yourself and anything that goes into it.

Basically just give up and clean it once a month.

One tip: I find that a paperhanging brush is the ideal tool for dusting fiddly areas like control panels, bookshelves, drawer cabinets, etc. Long, soft bristles and no long handle to get in the way. Also useful for sweep up solder splats, wire ends & general bench crap.

Its mostly from outside. Main road is just out of the room window.

I will see in the local hardware stores if I find these brushes. I think I saw it to the building paint workers.

The best thing I ever bought was one of those Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners (one of the earlier models without all the IoT connected bullshit).

I have hardwood floors almost everywhere and I could vacuum manually using a traditional vacuum cleaner and the Roomba would still pick up a canister worth of dust. It's actually quite shocking how much stuff get's kicked up into the air and settles on floors and surfaces.

Every 2-3 days, I just let that thing go and I have noticed a significant decrease in the level of dust. It also gets under things where you would not normally vacuum properly.

Just make sure it can't get to any small components or USB cables as it'll take those along for a ride.

I have a similar irritation....and it doesn't matter how much you clean, dust still builds up. Currently exprimenting with a Levoit Air Purifier (See https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071D58ZY5) but no conclusions yet....it's certainly collecting some crud in its filters though and I have the advantage that my study is relatively small (4m x 3m).

I live in a shitty old apartment with crap filtering and insulation.

20" box fan + 20" furnace filters running all the time. The filters last like 1.5-2 months.

Do this and clean much less. You might be able to decrease 3. when the room is not in use.

Putting a box around your desk and doing a second stage positive pressure filtered air will help to keep the desk even cleaner.

I used to  use a Furnace filter 16x20" in a fame and a couple of 250 cfm muffin fans.  I used a high quality 3M "Filtrete" nanofiber based filter, rather then the $1.69  open weave variety.  I just let it circulate in the room space, I do not try to go positive pressure at all, but if I could I would filter and keep that space at a slightly higher pressure.   Use a small visible laser in the dark to quantify your dust levels and sources.

Maybe you can tax when you pay for food and so.
