EEVblog Live?
« on: May 17, 2010, 11:11:21 pm »
Oh-oh, be afraid, I've been contemplating trying out a live EEVblog show via Ustream.
Why, well because it seems the trendy thing to do, and it might be fun!
Would anyone be interested in watching such a thing?
No idea what would be on it, probably just a Q&A thing based on live viewer questions.
And at what time? A weekday morning somewhere between 7am and 9am Sydney time (+10) would work best for me.

Stupid idea?
Comments anyone?

Dave.

Might be worth giving it a spin. (thinking of the general audience here)
If it were convenient, I might tune in. Not real likely though. Hell, I struggle to find windows of time to keep up on the blog as it is!!

Good stuff though. ;)

It would work for some in the USA, but that time is usually home time.  The eevblog allows everyone to time shift and watch as is convenient.

Maybe you can take "call ins" and record the session, and make that pre-recorded program available as an eevblog.  You can take the calls via webcams or chats or whatever you fancy.

It would be interactive. I believe I'd be able to see everyone's messages live as I'm shooting it.

adafruit has one, you get a bit of lag between the video and the text chat, which is amazing in todays internet, but it works pretty well, i try to watch it whne i can remember too.

i watch your videos at odd hours.  if you do the live thing, would you post the video for viewers that couldn't watch your show live?

Of course. I believe they automatically get recorded and anyone can play back at a later date, but I have not looked into the exact mechanism.
I probably wouldn't do it if it wasn't recordable and could give me some extra content for the blog.

Would you post the live videos on your eevblog site?  It's nice to have a central repository or collection of content.  It would be slightly inconvenient to bounce back and forth between youtube and ustream.  At any rate, I think it's a good idea!

Also, I have another interesting idea that might reduce your workload.  What if you propose a simple design challenge to your audience and have us respond with a schematic or whatever?  The response could be via video or email.  Then, maybe you can pick the one that you think is best or provide critique for the ones that might not be optimal. That way, you can leverage the talent and knowledge base of your viewers and simultaneously teach the lesser-experienced folks.  In addition to your existing blog format, I thought it would be might be easier for you on occasion to act as the moderator/facilitator of an interactive tech community.  That way, you won't have to do so much work preparing the videos or thinking up new content. Just a thought.    :)

Yep. It looks like I can download the recorded video from Ustream, so it's a simple matter to post as a regular blog episode on youtube and the podcast as per normal.

That whole interactive thing I've thought about before, but not sure how it would work in practice.
Might have to suss it out some time.

Thanks.

Hey Dave,

Great Idea.  Have a look at the twit(This Week In Tech) network to see how they do live shows.  There are Q&A ones in the lineup too.

live.twit.tv
It might be popular but that doesn't mean it's RIGHT

Dave.

If you're talking about Ustream then you have to manually hit the record button and every time you press stop you get a new file that you can save.
And of course yes there is a live chat that other members can use (you have to be registered though otherwise it's read only). The only "bad" thing is that, usually, the chat has something like 10sec lag. Just a bit annoying.

But except from that it's cool, you can program new shows so ppl will know when you'll be on-air and (if i'm not wrong) you can activate an automatic reminder via twitter

You know the chat box is actually an IRC client, and they give you instructions on how to setup an IRC client to connect to it.

Sounds great!  Many podcasters have found much success doing live shows.  Hopefully the show could be done on the weekend so time of day will be less of an issue.  Thanks

I notice that many tech blogger have Sunday night show. I realise most of my audience is US based, so that's Monday morning in Australia so that should work well.

Interesting.  Do you have stats to share, what's the country breakdown of your viewership?

Interesting.  Do you have stats to share, what's the country breakdown of your viewership?

According to Youtube, 33% US, 17% Oz, 8% UK, 5% Canada, then Netherlands, Sweden, Mexico, Norway, Germany, and Romania picking up the dregs.
6% female.

The blog site is a different order - US-UK-Germany-Oz-Canada

Thanks.   China has most of the manufacturing these days, interestingly they aren't as highly represented as the US.

I think it's worth a try. I'll tune in to watch. It will be early evening for me in the US.
