Original Series 70 range switch feel question
« on: March 21, 2012, 06:59:54 am »
Since I have purchased all my Fluke multimeters used, I have no idea how the range switch on the Fluke 75 is supposed to "feel".  I have a Fluke 83-3, Fluke 117, and Fluke 27II.  These 3 have the solid feel and "snaps" into place.

The well worn and probably 25 year old Fluke 75 is very "spongy" and it can sit in between range settings.  The Fluke 75 has no click or snap.

So the question to all the long time original Fluke 70 series owners, can you describe the range switch feel?  When new, is it anything like a Fluke 8x-3 series?

I remember it always being a bit spongy, and being able to hold the switch between the ranges.

Dave.

I have a number of 70-series meters (about one step on the staircase scale.) I would say the "spongy" range switch is normal. I think the design intent was to allow you to rotate the dial with a single finger from the side.

I purchased all of mine in various conditions from beat-up to like-new, and the only problem I encountered in the range-switch mechanism is that the tiny little molded-in posts that stop rotation can be sheared off by a heavy-handed user. I repaired those with tiny self-tapping screws. Otherwise it seems to be a pretty robust design, despite it's feel.

Dave, ModemHead,

Thanks for your feedback.  I was a bit worried because even the cheap 99 cent ebay 830 hard plastic multimeters have a more positive feedback than my Fluke 75.
