How to Get Rid of Annoying Neighbour's Dog?
« on: March 06, 2011, 03:22:21 am »
Moved to a new home, new neighbours (they also new here) but the one next to me got a dog. I'm a late surfer, went out every night to put my broadband internet usb stick outside for clear transmission, and then later take it back to avoid rain. and each time i went out, i got a shocking dog bark, threw small stones didnt make it stop, i dont want to use large stone and aim accurately coz i'm afraid i will hit the neighbour's car, the dog is clever always cover itself behind the car.

for now, i tried to keep friendly to it, each time i went out, made a whistle sound so i got an expected bark, no shock, fine! but later i'm planning to buy/build a slingshot or crossbow as a gift for myself to play with it. thats the best i can think of. any better idea other than killing or hurting that damned animal?

by and ultrasonic tranducer and aim it his way... it will either scare him and he will run away, hurt is ears or annoy him... which may just cause him to bark more :) Just a shot you might have to try.... there are quite a bit of low power ones you can try first.

second for ultrasound i had a seagull problem but as their protected by the queen (none the less) normal means of control did not suffice unless i fancied a spell behind bars.

i got fed up after my gf had a her picnic things stolen
that and its shit landing in my eye

so set to task to rid me of the fly rat problem i built a very similar device  to what i heard steve gibson talk about.
it bloody worked too set it up and they buggered off and never came back watch out though it set off a few alarms
i guess their stealing some else food now :P.

plus its nice to walk home after the pub not having to look up at the sky waiting for imminent attack of the flying rats

i still find hard that parasitic bin eating flying rat is protected by the queen

good luck and do tells what happens

Some USB modems can make use of an external aerial. For those that do not, I have seen use a very long USB cable and place the modem up in the attic, or hang it outside of a window whilst shrouded by a plastic box.

If you hurt the dog karma will hurt you. Why not say introduce yourself to your neighbours, and get to know the dog. Have a play with it for a few minutes every few days. When it realises you aren't the enemy it will be much easier on you.

Hmmmm, food for thought - do ultrasonics have the same effect on magpies?

These birds are quite intelligent family orientated birds, but when it comes to nesting season they are notorious swoopers, and have been known to draw blood if the bird is particularly aggressive.
They are the bane of pedestrians and cyclists alike around September in Australia.

Cyclists have tried all sorts of things like cable ties strapped to their helmet (think plastic afro), eyeballs looking back, you name it. but success is varied.
But I have never heard of using ultrasonics....

me? and lot of kids here. i think i'm going to have a heart attack if the shock hit me everyday.

by and ultrasonic tranducer and aim it his way...
nice idea. maybe a good toy to have. i found it cheap here http://cgi.ebay.com.my/Ultrasonic-Pest-Bug-Mouse-Rat-Repeller-wth-Built-in-Nig-/130493227972?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e6200a3c4 or any better (quality) option?
edit: wrong link! that was wall mounted, should be this... http://cgi.ebay.com.my/Ultrasonic-Stop-Flea-Pest-Repeller-Dog-Cat-Pets-Pet-/200583244348?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb3b16a3c
edit: tet! wrong again, that was for the dog :D. so does this, o well, use the dog's tool to get rid of it :P http://cgi.ebay.com.my/Ultrasonic-Dog-Bark-Stop-Anti-Barking-Control-NEW-TOP-/130493282807?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item1e620179f7

Some USB modems can make use of an external aerial. For those that do not, I have seen use a very long USB cable and place the modem up in the attic
my modem got CRC9 Connection port for the external ariel, very rare and small port. i have another thread for that discussion. the problem with putting the modem outside, is i have to take it back indoor to avoid rain and bring to work in the morning. not an option if its up high on the attic. our attic is not easily accessible and the modem still has to be outside for clear reception.

@Sionyn: i cannot see your video fully. i always got periodically disconnected, thats sux, our internet here.

and fyi, people treat dog here is not the same as how in other country where there are animal hospital, control and care centre, not happening here (infact even if it is, then people here will make laugh of it), and we got alot of stray dogs wandering around looking for food, just like the flying rats. we got a case years back that a kid got killed by its (plural). sometime we just let a dead dog decompose on the road hit by a car, or hopefully some resident nearby will take it away. the owner (neighboor) just feed the dog and give it shelter (and hope to protect his home i think, other than let their kids play and kiss it). he will not bath it and it smell awfull from metres distance! and the dogs here are not as charming as well taken care, long fur pampered dogs. and the religion will not allow us to touch the animal so easily. the neighboor is different religion, so they can sleep with their dog. but the problem is... this neighboor let his dog sleep outside next to gate separating my and his home.

Agreed. Stop being stupid. Dogs bark, it's what they do. The fact that it's wrong aside you could get in serious trouble with the law. The police don't look too kindly on those who abuse animals.

Dog's bark when their owners do not train them properly. If the owners don't want to bother doing this, they should not be allowed to have pets!

I had a similar problem with a neighbours dogs who barked practically none stop. The owners did seem to think this was a problem. I got one of these and it did a pretty good job on providing the training the dog needed. Just give it a blast everytime the dog barks and they soon learn not to.

If it hadn't worked, then I'm sure that one night the dogs would have managed to get out of their backyard and wander off.  ;D

Treat the dog to a bar of extra dark baking chocolate and he'll bark no more. ;)

No seriously don't do that, ultrasound is probably the best way to go although bear in mind that children are also sensitive to low ultrasonic frequencies so if the also have a baby it'll probably wake it.

The dog has just moved to a new house, and you are trying to hurt it to stop it barking? It's going to be as stressed as you are. Throwing stones at a dog just makes you a threat and it's always going to bark (or worse) at you.

Why not speak to the neighbours and get to know the dog?

i have dog my self a new foundland crossed with a poodle  a noodle nice dog too, he likes watching rugby chases the ball across the screen and some times tries catch the ball nearly kocking the tv over :D

in the video steve tells a story about a dog that knocked a lady off the pavement he built his device with a

555 using it as a oscillator then changed the output stage of his amplifier to 9 18 and 27 volts (he used 9 volt radio batteries) he used a pezio for ultrasound transducer but not quite he had it set to 15Khz just barely audio-able. He then sourced a parabolic dish a 10 inch from a camera flash and angled the transducer into it so it was directional.

i pretty much built the same thing including a cone shaped transducer driver that was quite hard to find.

as for what it sounds like steve is correct describing it as a bone crunching sound its completely alien to what i have experienced before no wonder it scared the gulls off.

id take pictures of it but i smashed it got smashed up after a coming home from a drunken night out with gf and our friends one of them dropped it on the floor buggering the traducer.

just be careful these things can damage your ears and the dog don't hurt him just train him to behave properly.

i believe it was a stray dog and they adopt it while moving to the house, last time there was a nice puppy as well, friendly, cute but smelly, but now its gone. well ultrasound/sonic is still the best suggestion. while ebaying for the transducer (no item with ultrasonic transducer name), then i saw this http://cgi.ebay.com.my/Ultrasound-Motion-Sensor-Robotic-Basic-Stamp-/220746770783?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336588695f i got this one! bought from sureelectronic, i'm sure one is the transducer and another one is detector. can this be modded to generate ultrasonic? maybe another addition to my "to do" list.

I can understand your situation shafri but that's probably because i spent 14 years in Italy where dogs are kept in cages and a barking dog in a cage scare bugalars apparently  ;D

My grandfathers dogs always had the whole courtyard to roam in and unlike other peoples dogs got walked. People in the UK and other countries with a similar attitude to pets/animals will find it hard to understand what your saying

Exactly. Wolves don't bark. Barking is an immature behaviour caused by improper socialisation.

We have a Lab/Dingo cross that was trained properly and she only barks at things she is meant to bark at. Not because she is bored, or sees some random person.

now this take me time to think. if uk'ers say i'm bad toward dogs, then perharp i will say the italian is worst. but well, each country have different perspective. we rather let em loose and do with "its" own business as long as "its" dont interfere with ours. for the pet, i got a stray cat from my old home brought here, but i will not cost to much on it, it can find food and clean by itself. the only difference with dog, is that i will allow the cat into my house and let it play with my kids (or kids play with it). one day if i got free time, i will bath it, and thats the scariest thing for em :D

Dogs are just wolves which haven't grown up which is normal for domesticated animals.

Now this is a subject very close to heart for me also.

To the people who state that dogs bark, get use to it, stay inside away from the dog, get friendly with it
I say B***S***T!
It's the neighbor's job to keep their dog quiet, and not yours to confront them.
If they're too stupid to control it they'll invariably be too stupid to stop themselves or their pals attacking you.

Just last week ended months of hell from a small, angry yapping dog next door that didn't stop if
ANY of the neighbour were home, and just got angrier and louder if any of us dared to walk outside.

This started in November, and knowing which Real Estate company had the rental property next door
thought I'd send an email to explain the problem. Next day I recieved a very sympathetic call saying they'd send out a reminder to the dog's owner of the fact that pets weren't allowed in the lease clause.
Nothing changed the next 2 weeks so thought I'd at least let the owner know about the fact I was extremely pissed off and made a PVC remote siren 'cannon' - as I didn't have anything ultrasonic at hand.

This worked for a few minutes each time, and I at least got to know what the dog's name was when the owner called it with 'ShutTheF**kupVincent' :-)
This dog was also 'setting off' others around the area, so it was a real 'bark-fest' and I was then blamed by another neighbor for upsetting HIS dog by setting off my warning device.

Next step was to call the council, by this time (December) they were on holiday, so my waking (and part-sleeping) holidays were spent listening to this 30cm angry yapping 'gremlin'.

So, eventually when our sleepy local council 'ranger' returned from holidays (January) I made an official complaint and was informed they would 'evaluate' the situation and call back.
After a few days no call was returned, but the sound lessened for 4 days which was a major relief,
but then started again as per usual. So, I again called the council asking what had happened.
Got a call from a ranger the next day saying that the owner had hired a citronella collar and everthing was just fine now. I suggested to the ranger that the dog had used up the citronella contents in a few days of continual barking so it was prety much useless. He said I should just 'give it a chance'...

Another month and still the same, until 2 weeks ago when I pointed out the problem again to the Real Estate company. This time it worked! Absolute silence (and no dog).

To sum up, all I'd like to say is that some people are real idiots (maybe dumber than the dogs) and councils aren't much better. Probably the best thing to do is get the most powerful ultrasonic device you can find, install speakers in multiple PVC 'cannons' and aim it at the damn dog.

Maybe something from here...

£40? this is cheaper... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOY-CROSSBOW-XBOW-Kids-Childs-Archery-Bow-Arrows-Robin-/270679133749?pt=UK_Archery&hash=item3f05bbce35 ... and very good if you are really pissed off. now, my neighboor's dog got lesser bark lately, seems better. i'll continue with my daily stuffs, if it got more bark, then a dedicated ultrasonic project for it. if it not solved, then dont blame me, my father never bought me a crossbow as present when i was a kid.

i got one of these from radio shack for $10. bark off i think a lot of the bad reviews are justified, it wasn't too great out of the box...

i added a led to confirm when the unit has been triggered. i quickly found out it is WAY too sensitive! even on low, the unit was very easily tripped by the tv across the room, talking too loud, etc. changed one resistor (i forget which or what i changed it to) but it calmed the unit way down! now, when my dog's bark they are interrupted by a brief ultrasonic tone which is usually enough to break their concentration and cause them to lose focus on what it was they were barking at. sometimes, it just doesn't work as they get too worked up to even care about the tone. but yea, out of the box, the product was completely useless as the dog will never associate barking with the annoying tone if it false triggers. of course, ymmv!

another thing that works for me is water... either a squirt gun or sprayer bottle.  this works great for instant compliance. getting it to stick however, will take proper training by the owner.
