IMPORTANT: Please Read - EEVblog Rules.
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:26:02 am »
Ok, I've had enough, not only of the personal attacks on this forum, but also people bitching about everyone and perpetuating it all by fueling the fire instead of just ignoring them and/or reporting posts.
It ends now.
My goal was to have this as a self moderating and open forum, with people leading by example, but it seems that this is not currently working.

I understand everyone has different attitudes, tolerances, and ways they communicate, so personally I'm very tolerant of what people say on here. But it seems others are not, and it's starting to ruin the forum for everyone.

I was hoping the personal attacks, innuendos and slurs would be so few (we all make occasional emotional outbursts) that I could simply moderate and delete them in extreme case, or mostly everyone simply ignore them, without having to ban people who otherwise make good technical contributions. But I'm now doubting this is the case as I cannot see things improving. I've asked for people to quit it, but they continue, and this makes me very sad indeed.

Bitch and argue all you want about technical stuff, that's encouraged and what the forum is for, but bitching, arguing about, and slandering other members is NOT acceptable. I don't think that is too much to ask to have one big rule like that on here?

So if anyone makes another personal attack, they will get banned from the forum, simple as that.
I hope that is clear enough.

If for some reason you think you've been unfairly banned, contact me and we can discuss it.

Thanks.
Dave.

i sir! my apology to everyone. and afaics, the "personal attack" thing ended few days/weeks ago (with control from few parties varieties of netcops i guess). so i think its "seasonal" not "continuous". duh, do i get banned by saying "Dave you are a crap!" ? without a smiley? :P

I welcome the rule, In 20+ years of being online every forum has had this problem; the usenets have zero moderation and see what happens; it degenerates into noise >= signal.   Hopefully, its not needed frequently.  In my forums I warn folks to chill before the banning, and leave offending threads as proof that a ban was justified.   Some of the participants that caused this rule to be made have been banned from other forums; its easy to find since they used the same screen name and put enough material in profiles to confirm identities.
Best Wishes,

Dave

unfortunately it is human nature. in the beginning there were fewer but reasonable people and all respected each other and we did self moderate, I remember many a heated discussion ending peacefully with acceptance from all. Unfortunately as with all forums as it gets bigger people feel that they are less recognizable and feel more like they can act as they like without being found or making a big enough stick to warrant action. New members are unaware of the character of others that have been around for a while and established themselves and those who have been around a while start to think they are better than the newer member. So it does start to descend into chaos I am afraid, put it down to human nature. I must admit although I was not about to see the latest row and came upon it after it was cleaned up I am not sorry about the loss of the member, he did cause a lot of unnecessary problems and I'd often tried to reason with him but of late it was less effective. That's just life I'm afraid. This forum is a lot better than many though so take comfort in that at least.

It's not just human nature, its the nature of all things in the universe, if you buy a large quantity of untested (unselected) IC's, you get some malfunctioning ones.  :D

Rules read, and acknowledged. If I get banned here I know I deserve it. Thanks again for this forum Dave. I hope it and your blog continue to provide you a good living.

Dave has created a really amazing place for us here.

Beginners are treated with as much respect as people with a lifetime in electronics, and we are allowed to be more enthusiastic about the way the continuity tester works on a multimeter, then we probably are about the latest integrated oscilloscope/spectrum analyzer combo from Tektronix.

This is a place that is exciting because there is a good energy - it motivates and something great could come from it.

Hopefully, you came here to learn. You came here to be better then you were. You came here to get excited. You came here to be inspired. You came here to inspire others. With every post, stay completely focused. Please don't forget why you came here.

Thanks Everyone for all the really exceptional and generous posts, and thank you Dave.

Richard.

there is a social element to the forum too, it is not just about electronics and that is where things can derail. I left another forum because apart from the fact that moderators were giving misguided info there was a lot of bad attitude going around.
