The prices are over the roof because mobile operators decided to make it so, each one keeping more or less the same price so you can't avoid it, while they collect nice profit. SMS are even worse, they cost next to nothing to distribute, but if you wanted to put 40GB data through that...

Actually, let's try that ... I picked price of SMS for some O2 Slovakia package, which is 0.06 Eur/SMS. Single SMS is 140 bytes long so there is 307 million messages to get 40GB of data through, which is 18.4 million Eur (26 mil USD, 17 mil GBP). I've read somewhere that the average markup on SMS messages in US is about 7000%, no idea how much it is here but a big chunk of that would be pure profit for the operator.

Is that a standard bandwidth limit there? Because I do that much in about a week (I'm guessing that 40GB would be for a month?).
