Japan earthquake and "electronic consequences".
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:19:25 am »
I was reading an article about LCDs and HDDs problems occurred by the earthquake in Japan. Have anyone noticed anything in the "electronics core stuff" (chips, parts, instruments e.t.c.)? Availability problems, higher prices...

Although not many parts are made in Japan these days, I think there are a lot of obscure but essential supplies that may have an effect - ISTR a while ago a chip shortage due to problems at a factory that made the plastic encapsulant for chips.    There are probably umpteen other obscure niche areas supplied by a very few specialist Japanese companies that could have an impact.
probably hard to predict at this stage, and affected manufacturers aren;t going to start shouting about it... I hear Renesas already has some fab closure issues.

TI have 1 plant quite severely damaged, and another offline. Details here http://newscenter.ti.com/Blogs/newsroom/archive/2011/03/14/update-from-ti-on-earthquake-damage-to-factories-in-japan-646520.aspx

I had read that 2 major epoxy making sites were out of action too.

I remember about 15 years ago some factory in Japan burned down, the cost of RAM more than doubled.

Only time will tell how this latest disaster will affect the global supply chain.  Methinks it won't be all that bad.

As I recall, that was the Kobe earthquake.  Knocked out, amongst other things, a fair chunk of the worldwide DRAM manufacturing capability.

From what I have read we are still running on pre-earthquake inventory for most things. Most companies that I care about haven't suffered much damage and the major issue is the lack of power (most companies have voluntarily had 1-2 weeks of no production).

Prices will probably spike in a few weeks when the old stock runs low coinciding with the consequences of a break in production.
