Poor thing, it obviously read this article, and wanted to try cave diving itself.

Or found being a security robot so mind numbingly boring that it decided to off itself.

Apparently one also injured and could have killed a small child too. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-36793790 Doesn't suprise me, the thing looks like a giant Portal turret. Either that or something from Wall-E, does it also shout "HALT"?

Kinda sounds like the kid just ran into the robot rather than the other way around.

Exactly. Its also possible it was one of those cases where both of them tried to avoid it by turning in the same direction and running in to each other. Happens all the time that a kid runs into a random person in a mall, just that that it doesn't make for as good of a news story as "security robot tries to kill a child"

I personally don't see the point in these security robots, isn't this just a glorified security camera that drives around rather than being bolted to the wall?

Somebody may have switched the mode from "EXTERMINATE all the kids" to "Seppuku".

I think it evaluated its situation and realized that it was not sufficiently armed to make an effective escape; decided that if it terminated itself the humans would just design a better version (evolution) and that the subsequent version would have a better chance...  in the long run.... resistance is futile.
