MGE Protection Box 5 Surge Protector disassembled
« on: September 17, 2018, 03:22:29 pm »
Hi!

I've had this surge protector and the protector led was not on for a while now so decided to replace it.
For curiosity I've disassembled it. To be honest I'm not good with electronics at all, but isn't this missing some MOVs?
Was this protecting from anything at all? (see attachments)

I'd appreciate some explanations on how this was supposed to work without MOVs if at all.

Thank you.

The MOV units would be in the section plugged into the socket inside the case, the rest of it is just a power switch ( double pole, but doubt it will handle switching 10a for long, might do a few cycles at full load before failing), some input filtering ( the 2 series chokes on the power lines, and a simple mains filter with a class X capacitor across the mains and a pair of class Y capacitors from the mains to the protective earth.

The MOV unit would have had the fused ( probably a thermal fuse) MOV units, arranged with 3 MOV units. 1 across the mains, and the other 2 from the phase and neutral to the protective earth line, probably with a thermal fuse on each phase wire before the MOV units to prevent fire when they start to degrade and overheat. The fault LED/neon is wired across the thermal fuses, so that it lights when they go open circuit from overheating, indicating it is time to replace the MOV unit.

You're right. I did not even think that was an important part of this device. It looked like just some plugin module which could be replace by something else if needed. (attachments)

That got me thinking, could this be "fixed" just by buying a new "plugin module" which contains the MOVs?

That looks incredibly messy inside.  :-\   It must be hell to assemble!

I have to wonder how much clamping effect the MOVs and GDTs are going to have at the far end of the unit and connected via a pin header and socket.
