Microscope Cam Adapter
« on: January 26, 2013, 05:27:51 am »
I want to finally get around to getting video and still camera adapter for my Olympus SZ series microscope.
But it seems my eyepieces and eyepiece mount aren't the usual standards.

25mm internal diameter, with a 28mm outer thread. My WF10X eyepieces are threaded to fit this 28mm thread, they don't just slip in.

Much of the USB cam market out there seems to be 23.2mm

And no, I don't want to dick around 3D printing an adapter, I want to do it properly.
Either a new (or old) compact cam that fits and can shoot stills and video, or a high res USB cam that can fit, but they need the integral x10 WF lens as well, or somehow slip over my existing WF10x eyepieces (33.2mm outer dia)

Any ideas?

Dave.

Can you get a pipe with 33,2mm inner diameter?

Because I got a Aiptek Action HD cam with a lens outer diameter of 33.9mm, what is the thicker diameter of the WF10x eyepiece you got?

Maybe you can connect the Aiptek camera with a pipe to your eyepiece.

I paid 145 euro’s for the camera couple years ago but there is a guy on ebay selling them as old model in US package for really cheap, a colleague of my got it from him and it is exactly same as mine and you get a waterproof case with it, so you can take it to your canyon trips without bringing your expensive cam  ^-^

The camera specs are:
LCD Display: 2.4’’ (6 cm)
3X optical Zoom
5?Megapixel CMOS Sensor
1080p 30fps
720p 60fps
AVC H.264 Video

It's 33.2mm as mention at the thickest outer dia.

I've found that all my 3 cams have to basically be flat up against the WF10 lens in order to get full screen. But the quality isn't the best.
Ideally I want a proper design microscope camera with properly integrated x10 lens, so it just works 100%, with no distortion etc.

Ah, I get how these microscope camera adapters work now.
You remove the 10X eyepiece, and you get a "0.5X relay lens" which gives you an equivalent of your x15 eyepiece into your camera, be it a USB cam, or a regular interchangable lens camera.
Think I might get a cheap micro four thirds camera without a lens, and a 23.2mm adapter, like this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Olympus-PEN-Micro-4-3-0-5x-relay-lens-ADAPTER-to-Microscope-PL12-Panasonic-Lumix-/261153744519
That should fit into my 25mm tube with a bit of tape or something.

Hi Dave,
that is a good idea. This inspires me to check if I can get/make a DIY adapter for my own stereo scope.

Thx

You may want to take a look at my thread on microscope camera from Amscope. I mention several gotcha's I experienced.

Hi robrenz,
I have missed your scope threat until now. Thx for the link and as always it is really awesome what you do.
My scope is a Zeiss Stemi 2000 unfortunately without Trinocular option. But it is optically so good I doubt I can find a equally good one for a reasonable price with the camera option. So this eyepiece adapter looks like a very good compromise, even so it is not comfortable to use.
Bye
