MicroUSB currency/voltage meter
« on: February 06, 2019, 04:49:11 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking for an (ideally) 2-in-1 device that can show voltage and currency on a MicroUSB cable. For the micro side this looks promising:

https://www.mobilefun.co.uk/micro-usb-power-current-voltage-detector-50100

Discontinued, unfortunately.

For the regular size USB connector a couple of interesting suggestions (some of the products are updated to support USBv3 already) here:

https://www.pretzellogix.net/2015/04/20/the-portable-led-usb-multimeter-that-you-didnt-know-you-needed/

The idea is to check the gazillion adapters and cables laying around and throw out those that are out of specs.

Suggestions to destroy things like USB extenders and take measurements from them are not welcome :) First they are too long and currency drop will be significant on the MicroUSB side and second this must be a portable solution that will get some beating being carried in a backpack.

I just bought about half dozen of different USB current and voltage meters on eBay for close to nothing. I don't know how the even pay for the shipping, never mind the item.

They are all regular USB connectors but you can get adapters, also on eBay, for close to nothing.
All my posts are made with 100% recycled electrons and bare traces of grey matter.

This looks promising, good reviews too:

Kinda expensive though but they have multiple versions.

Seems like you can test the MicroUSB plug with this gadget too.

Here is a quick search that should give some usb testers with micro USB plugs inputs, it implies a second cable to do the job :

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=usb+tester&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=0

If one can make knowledge flow than it will go from negative to positve , for real

If you need it for checking usb cables and power adapters, UM24 might be enough to do it, not very expensive, but it has almost everything you need. Shows voltage, current, power. With it you can even check resistance of usb leads. The only other thing you need is something like 15W constant current load.

I know there are other cheaper meters, they will also measure and show some of functions that UM24 has, but they might be slightly inaccurate.

Here I found video about this cable testing function

Plenty of garbage on eBay but I found this excellent blog with reviews of such meters:

https://usbchargingblog.wordpress.com

UM25C (an upgraded version of UM24) seems to be one of the better options but I'm still going through the pages to see if something more interesting will come up.
