Music while working
« on: May 16, 2014, 04:25:13 pm »
What do you guys like to listen to while you work?

I like to put on stuff like Tangerine Dream's Rubycon and pretend I'm in space. Sometimes people get mad though cause I don't respond when they talk to me. I tried explaining that in space no one can hear you scream, so they probably can't hear you talk either, but it fell on deaf ears.

I have spotify on non-stop. Depending on my mood it can be everything from 90s alt-rock to hip-hop to "space music".

One of my go-to's are the early "In Search of Sunrise" compilations, nice melodic background music.

Completely wrong, programmers need Death Metal to keep productivity up.

Nerd:  I've been enjoying the BSG soundtracks lately.  One of my fave electronic artists (Sasha) also seems to work well for me.

I like to watch Dave's and Mike's videos for inspiration, although productivity plummets from the distraction if I try to work at the same time.  Need a dual-core brain for that I think.

I usually just have Pandora playing. I use headphones, as I share my office/lab. It's useful because my bluetooth headphones have media controls on them, so I can skip a song without even looking up.

Brown noise is the best. Pink noise and white noise have too much high frequencies.

acidbath
simple 4/4 cadence rythms
simple melodies
loud enough to drown out ambient noise, yet very easy to tune out such that im not aware im listening to anything until it stops or the headphones start to hurt my ears. (in other words I can focus on work completely distraction free)

I like silence.

When actually testing circuits, I always turn off all the music. I want to hear very clearly if something makes a 'pop', a transformer starts to hum, or a cap starts to make an interesting 'pssssh' noise.

I usually listen to some "so called" mechanical engineers babbling, making noises, telling not funny stuff, making more noises for 8 hours a day. I'm starting to understand why sometimes people go to work with a machine gun...

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Division Bell, Pink Floyd just released a new music video for Marooned which you can see here: http://www.divisionbell20.com/

Something nice to listen to today.

C o m a COMA! Say it!

In the early 90s I used to download MODs like crazy. I used several DOS programs because I had a crappy 386sx at the time.

I love mods.  I've started a pet project to organize a CD's-worth of my favorite old electronica mods and re-sample them with modern synths, sample packs, and effects plugins.  Ironically, it's really easy to get attached to the quirks of the original samples -- variable length attacks, loop points, and frequency spectrum based on the played note, for example.

I tend to forget they only used 8 bit samples so you could still hear a lot of audio artifacts.

I have a couple of hundred of MP3s (which I collected in nearly 20 years) which I usually play in random order. Every now and then I add and/or delete some. When I need to think hard about a tough problem I prefer silence though.

It must be a generational thing, but I've never understood people's need to go through life with a soundtrack.

I don't mind too much if somebody else has a radio mumbling away in the background, but I can't think of anything worse than loud music when I'm trying to think! >:(

A "pet hate" of mine is when people post YouTube videos with a totally out of context vocal track behind them.

I don't think it's generational, I think it's just the way some people's mind works.  1) I'm really into music.  It's a thread that weaves itself through every part of my life.  2) I find a good steady beat can sync my mind to a pattern, and it becomes easier to concentrate.  Otherwise, there are all the infinite, minute distractions of other people's conversations, the HVAC, traffic noise, etc...

In general I find a musical track to any youtube video that is trying to explain something annoying.  Half the time the music makes it almost impossible to hear them.  Doubly so if the person in the video has a strong accent.

I don't need music, really, but I need some sort of predictable noise, and music is perfect for that. Otherwise, everything going on in the background distracts me. :scared:

Noisy office, noisy home, music with lirics are not productive, so Jazz or Classical but only if in the mood.
So my preference reagge beats, always works no matter the mood.

The problem with lyrics is that I tend to pay attention to the lyrics taking concentration away. Of course it depends on the task, if it's just changing things that are not too complicated the noise doesn't bother me at all, but comming up with new algotrithims in a noisy environment it's not very productive and frustating.
