Name for a LCR measure device
« on: September 27, 2018, 08:20:11 pm »
Hi guys,

I am working on a project where we (me and my friend) are trying to create a LCR measurement device.
There will be a handheld version but also a benchtop version. But for this project and also for the device we need a name.
I only have come up with ReCaIn meter. But this is of course a bit lame.
Therefor we need a sparky and catchy name!   :-//

So please let your creativity flow, nothing is wrong. And help us come up with a name :)

How about RICmeter?  (Resistance Inductance Capacitance)

Veel succes!

A few things that come to mind are C-R-I-Spy, CLR-RLC (for Clear RLC and I like that it is a palindrome), and CaLibRate.

If you come up with a clever way to represent the reading on the screen (or even if it just has a bargraph, and if that feature is rare in LCR meters, which I don't know): Impedisplay. (Inspired by Pye's Scalamp galvanometers of decades past.)

You can buy unbacklit LCDs and backlight diffusers for them separately, and put those together with whatever LED you want (probably especially so if you get custom LCDs manufactured, as Dave recently did some videos on). Or, if you're willing to use an alphanumeric (2 lines, 5×7 pixels per character) display, Adafruit has RGB-backlit ones, both positive and negative text.
I refuse to use AD's LTspice or any other "free" software whose license agreement prohibits benchmarking it (which implies it's really bad) or publicly disclosing the existence of the agreement. Fortunately, I haven't agreed to that one, and those terms are public already.

Right now I use the MCCOG128064B12W-FPTLW display. But in the future I want to use MCOT128064N2Z-YBM.
The Adafruit RGB LCD is a character display, but I am looking for a graphical LCD.
Therefor you have got this onehttps://www.digikey.nl/product-detail/en/newhaven-display-intl/NHD-C12832A1Z-FS(RGB)-FBW-3V/NHD-C12832A1Z-FS(RGB)-FBW-3V-ND/5057935?utm_adgroup=&mkwid=sgwo1po9t&pcrid=293421467426&pkw=&pmt=&pdv=c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgOzdBRDlARIsAJ6_HNnVSAvVgdnfgNFw1lTPsgOPZjG7n4GagaRDrhgy0O-1_U1zOHW9VOIaAg3XEALw_wcB

I only need to think about the usage of the other colors. Like when to use blue or green or maybe yellow as a background.
Otherwise there is no use for a RGB LCD.  :scared:

You could assign different colors to different simultaneously measurable parameters, and mix those colors according to the measurements. It would provide an instant visual indication of the approximate values, like the bargraph display on a DMM, but only fully useful to colorsighted people. (Though you could add settings for what color represents what, and various adaptive color schemes for different kinds of colorblindness.)

Make that 666 F or 666 H for an elusive Easter Egg. Getting either of those values is very difficult compared to just using a 1k potentiometer.

If using rgb backlit graphic lcd is too troublesome, or too expensive, you can always just display little animated devil somewhere on the display, or use some cheap TFT or OLED display. It depends on complexity of your device, I guess. You could also try to use different backlight colour depending on measured component, blue on inductors, green on caps and yellow for resistors. Or use it for some other purposes.

I thought of another name: InCaRe - after all we all care about our devices, right?

I am already thinking about some easter eggs, like when you place the measurement devices upside down the numbers and text fall down.  ;)
But do you guys have more ideas when it comes to easter eggs. The 666 value part will be implemented.

I thought of another name: InCaRe - after all we all care about our devices, right?
I really love this name, also the reason is really good. I can almost sell it with this slogan.

What do you guys think about the RGB graphical LCD?
