New (old) additions to my bench
« on: March 08, 2012, 02:11:59 pm »
I was looking for an oscilloscope for a while now, my old 20MHz is still good but i just wanted a new toy ::)

Yesterday I found one on a national auction site (also owned by Ebay) I had to be quick because these oscilloscopes are sold pretty fast here, so I called the seller and he was a retired Electronics engineer , he was not using the oscilloscope for a while now.

I drove to the seller (1 hour ride) and picked up the oscilloscope after couple tests, it’s a Tektronix 2221A 100MHz digital storage oscilloscope, while I was testing the scope we got in to a nice conversation about old times and he suddenly said “I got something for you, I think you would like it” he went upstairs and came back with a FLUKE 8030A Multimeter, this fluke was brand new he barely used it and only the charger was missing, he said “you can have this free” I was pretty happy with it, I got couple modern Flukes and this one is just nice to have, and the color matches to my new oscilloscope! Very nice man I must say  :)

This is the Tek 2221A, in pretty good shape and it works perfect and I also got 2 original Tektronix P6109 150MHz probes, plus the manuals, it is not on my bench yet because I need to free some space  ;D

And this is the free FLUKE 8030A

Even with the original Tek front cover. They are super rare.

Really nice catch, especially with probe, manuals and "scope cover" !!!! Congratulations.

Even with the original Tek front cover. They are super rare.

Yep, so rare that I got few offers just for the cover of my 2465b when I made the thread bout it while ago.  :-\
For sure they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands to get it.  ;D

You know what you need to do now, don't you?

Post a picture of the scope showing the Tektronix logo easter egg.
One can never have enough oscilloscopes.

Very nice.  The equipment looks barely used, and is in wonderful shape.  Always good to get gear from retiring EE, techs or hams, they are often very well cared for.

On a sad note, the 'silent key' hams seem to happen more often now than before, but I think they'd be happy to know their gear continues to live on with others who can use it rather than sitting idle in storage or becoming land fill somewhere.

Best Wishes,

 Saturation

Thanks guys, I never knew these covers where rare, the one at my old work had one to, not nice and clean as this one but still.

For sure they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands to get it.  ;D
Same here BravoV, I keep my equipment clean, so clean even my colleagues get crazy about it :) If you see my own 12 and 6 year old Fluke’s they just look new, I get always genuine pouches for it, even for the leads.

Thanks :) and yes indeed wkb, the add was only for 16 hours on Marktplaats :P There is one guy who buys all these kind a deals and put another 100€ to it on Marktplaats, I lost couple nice oscilloscopes to him last couple weeks, but maybe it was good in a way, because this one is so nice and clean.

The man was in his late 70’s saturation, he didn’t use it for last 6 years, and indeed like you said he was very happy to sell someone with great enthusiasm (me :P )

Post a picture of the scope showing the Tektronix logo easter egg.

Sure tekfan :D sorry its pretty dark in here and flash wouldn’t help much so I only took the pictures of the logos not entire oscilloscope.

Here the logo and old man on his skate flying around the screen:

That's really nice! Looks like engineers had a good sense of humour back then.

Thanks guys :)

I did play a lot with the Tek yesterday night and it is pretty accurate too, I need to find a servicing manual for later usage.

grenert, I will put the Fluke 8030A somewhere on my bench just for the looks :) I need to find out what kind a charger/power supply it uses.

Thanks a lot grenert! :D

Like most old manuals they only give a part number and that was enough to find out what kind a voltage and current I need (5.8 DC 0.15A) and most important part, it has a different pin out than most usual adapters, outside coil is + and the inner side is –

The 2221A service manual is little harder to find to be honest, if I am correct it is only made for one or two years and then there was new series, i might be wrong but thats what i could find about this oscilloscope, so it is not widely sold model, but we will see :)

The user manual is easy enough:

http://128.238.9.201/~kurt/manuals/manuals/Tektronix/TEK%202221A%20User.pdf

The service manual will probably require parting with a few $$ - qservice has it as a download for $9.49

Thanks grumpydoc, i got the original manual (see the picture) :)
Got the pdf one too, it was the second link on google.

I seen that manual at qservice but unfortunatly it is the actual user / operator manual :(

You may want to look at the Tek 2232 manual. It is basically the same scope but with added delayed time base.

Manual:
