optical engineering youtube channels?
« on: September 21, 2018, 08:43:34 pm »
So there is plenty of good EE Vblogs like mikeselectricstuff, eevblog, TSP and a few other very decent ones.

There is plenty of good mechanical blogs like ox-tool-co

Then there are some multidisciplinary ones like AVE

But is there anyone for optics? Stuff like telescopes, microscopes, binoculars, monoculars.. I don't mean photo camera performance but actual optical systems engineering/analysis that consist of mirrors and lens and whatever else. The laser blogs seem to focus more on power... but I have yet to see something like a professional tear down a binoculars in the dave jones analysis way

In terms of written content the Lensrentals blog has a bunch of interesting optical details in their lens analysis & teardown posts, and if you dig in you can find details of the custom optical test equipment they've had made.

I gave up looking for good optics tutorials a long time ago. Any software that is out there tends to be difficult to use and expensive. The only time I did any optics design was for steering or deflecting a CO2 laser beam through a series of lenses and mirrors to get a 360 degree scan for a laser wire stripper. Had to work it out from first principals and do the ray tracing  using a speadsheet. It worked so I couldn't have been that far off. It doesn't take that much maths to ray trace one or two lenses but a lot of time to derive everything from first principals.
