220->12V inverter
« on: January 28, 2019, 10:29:39 am »
Hi,

I want to power up a 12V 8A car vacuum machine for cleaning a small room in the house. Struggling to find reputable brand 220->12V inverter (I guess it's not a big market). So far only 2 hits on eBay that do not inspire much confidence:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180W-AC-220V-DC-12V-15A-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Power-Converter-Adapter-Inverter/232176331228

Has anyone seen a decent inverter that can be trusted? I'm thinking at least 12A DC output.

Cheers

You'll probably get better results if you look for 12 volt power supply, the term inverter generally applies going from DC to AC, whereas you're looking for the other way around

Meanwell is a pretty decent brand.

Since you're running a motor load I'd probably look for a 15 amp power supply or thereabouts.
motors take a lot more current to start and a smaller power supply might shut down.

You could just use a regular ATX power supply.
You can turn it on without a pc, by connecting the PS_ON pin to ground with a wire...

The yellow wires are 12v, ground is black... you can use either the wires in the atx 24 pin connector, or you can use a pci-e 6pin connector (you have 3 pairs of 12v + gnd wires there) or you can hook into the molex connectors.

Assuming you don't already have an ATX PSU lying around, just get one of those HP server PSUs.

12 V, 200 W power supplies are available as sand on the beach. Your using the term "inverter" has probably thwarted your search.
You could probably just use a car battery charger.

I have a battery charger lying around but the problem is (also with the suggestions above) I need to power a male cigarette socket of something that needs to move around so non-insulated hot wires not an option.

Something like the device you found on ebay would be ideal. It just needs to be capable of more than 8A: 10A would be idea.

If the vacuum is for a car chances are it takes 12v DC and not AC, so you don't want an inverter but just a power supply.  I don't think 12v (out) inverters are that common, as they would be a rather niche application.
