Is it a Lucas part?

No... That is just a generic Chinese clone of AMS1117-5.0.

Probing a biggish cap I let the smoke out of the probe and something else out of me!
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

I just let the smoke out of an alligator clip.

I just let the smoke out of a large (1W) resistor being stupid with the scope ground. It survived though, must have some smoke left.

I just let the smoke out of an alligator clip.

I let the smoke out of a scope probe once, I got a brain fart and got the probe and ground clip reversed and was using a computer PSU as the power supply.  The 5v rail really packs a punch.  No weird noises, no sparks. Then suddently smoke is just coming right out of the probe ground clip wire.   :-DD

I really need to invest in a proper isolated bench power supply. :P  Not that they're that expensive, I just need to actually get one.

Well, from the many prior posts on this forum, member here repeatedly voiced that "a good precision POT is way better than a cheap VR".

May be that is where the smoke is coming from...  Too bad POT is not legal in my State, I can just about use a good puff right now.

Let's up the game. You really WANT an isolated scope.

No, what you want is a differential probe.

Guilty as charged, I have floated my scope before.  >:D   But yeah I should probably invest in an isolated differential probe.

It really would be better if we evolved out of the iron age and stopped using metal cases on scopes with input sockets bolted to them. Stupid and hazardous arrangement. Not only because earthing yourself greatly increases the risk of electrocution, but because of the risk of burns or welding 'flash' on high current gear.

It takes two connections to cause an electrocution. When working on HV gear, occasionally touching a live connection is a risk of the job that can never be wholly eliminated no matter how careful you are. Not being earthed at the time,  is the thing which will save your life.  :phew:
