Dave seems good at sniffing out the age of old electronics but can he find memory cards with porn?

Onion in disguise?

Edit: Nope, just a really, REALLY poorly written article that buries something that's actually kind of cool under a mountain of sensationalist bullshit in order to increase page views...

So, what if I hide the flash drive in a light fixture in the ceiling, well above where the dog could smell? Or I could hide it inside of large sausage in the fridge! What if I hid a small flash drive *inside* a larger flash drive?!

I smell a bit of bullshit here... What exactly would cause a flash drive or SD card to smell different from any other electronics in a plastic case? The article says the dog wouldn't be confused by a remote control or other electronics, so what exactly are they smelling? Do flash chips give off a particular odor? It can't be the plastic, because I've got flash drives that are made with different types of plastic.

...so what exactly are they smelling?

They're smelling the jism that you've transferred to the evidence after completing the deed.  O0

It is interesting to think that certain components can have a distinct smell...

Then wouldn't using a napkin or Fleshlight to catch your DNA deposit (followed by washing your hands, like most normal people do, at least I hope they do) defeat this then?

No, since this is about child porn!  :scared:

There are differences between adult porn and child porn and this dog is pretty damned good at the latter! :palm:

It says in the article:

Quote
He is trained to smell the chemical compounds unique to photo and video storage...Because the chemical URL can smell is distinct for storage devices, he isn't confused by remote controls or garage door openers. His nose is strong enough smell through other materials, such as fabric or carpet..

Interestingly, it also says the dog cost $10,000 and:

Quote
Utah won the bid because of the state's high rate of porn consumption... Utah did, however, become the first state to declare pornography a public health crisis.

So there are a few things going on here. One... Utah? Why Utah? Two... I assume it is to get people who are already suspected of possessing underage images. They are not just busting randomly into houses looking for general-purpose legal stuff. [EDIT: See below.  :palm:]  Three... Does Utah have different laws than the rest of the country? [EDIT: See below.  :palm:]

Oh sh#t.... I just found this out....

http://abcnews.com.co/utah-makes-pornography-illegal/

Wow! That explains it. They are turning into a police state where they will be busting in on everyone and confiscating their hard drives, video tapes and flash drives and searching for files and fining and jailing people. Next, they will be asking ISP's to either provide IP addresses of everyone who has visited porn sites (to bust them), or asking all ISP's in the state to block all porn sites, or perhaps use it for surveillance so they can bust people suspected of viewing anything online.

Question: Is Utah the ONLY state in the union to make possession or viewing of porn by all people (even adults over 21 years of age) illegal?

Slippery slope....  (No pun intended)....

According to these articles, it is not actually illegal in Utah and there are no actual fines or jail time, so what is going on?:

http://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2016-04-22/utah-is-off-base-declaring-pornography-a-public-health-hazard

And then there's this legal code which does show fines and jail time:

A bit more than bullshit I think. The police in the USA regularly use sniffer dogs to establish 'probable cause' for a search. If they can convince enough people that the dog can magically differentiate between different types of (chemically identical) electronics they don't have to worry about that pesky constitution or any of those messy civil rights and they can claim probable cause for searching anyone carrying or possessing electronics. There's quite sound research that shows sniffer dogs tend to react more to their handlers than to what they actually smell - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3078300/] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3078300/ for example.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

http://abcnews.com.co/utah-makes-pornography-illegal/

That is a brilliant piss-take article.  Top notch.

Quote
“First time offenders will see fines of $100-$500, depending on the quantity of pornography or the amount of digital graphic content seized on the criminal’s computer. Repeat offenders can expect 30 days in jail or worse, depending on what type of pornography is found in the individual’s possession. Missionary style pornography will result in a fine or up to 30 days in jail, while pornography that involves any kind of homogayness, that being sodomy or Devil worshipping, will result in long-term prison sentences. Law enforcement will also be working closely with local ISPs and the NSA to monitor those who search out porn on the internet. We will win the war on porn and masturbation.”

If porn is a public health crisis, what could be said for violence? (Yes, sometimes the two go together.) That somehow having a minor see the creation of life is worse than them seeing the destruction of it?

I really wonder if it's the biggest example of the Streisand Effect. That it is made a bigger deal than it is because it's "forbidden".

I do not doubt the sensitivity of a suitable dog's nose (a while ago I was doing tracking with a german shepherd dog club - with training, their tracking ability is amazing), however, I seriously doubt the ability of a dog to discriminate a memory storage device from any other electronic device that is made from the same stuff (FR4 PCB, resin IC packaging, fire retardant plastic casing, etc).

I would not be surprised if they used a trained dog to say find a TF/microSD card in a literal hay stack, but I seriously doubt the ability of a dog to find that same SD card in a room full of electronic trinkets.

This is what Chinese government does all the time in many aspects. They create super strict laws, then do not enforce it, but collect evidence. Then, the officers can have absolute privilege on the people because everyone did something illegal, with evidence held on officers' hands.

I personally know a Chinese man who admitted to smuggling $US 40,000 out of China with the notes strapped around his legs and torso. I asked what would happen if he got caught. He said the money would likely be taken from him and he would be then allowed to fly out. Nothing recorded.

Smuggling money out of China is possibly the world's biggest criminal activity today, with banks involved, couriers, front companies and other rackets.

Our +7 levels of different goverments even go further. They create a clowd of overlapping, contradictory, uncomplete, overcomplex laws.
This way, everybody that de-facto comes out of his sofa to undertake something, is illegal following some aspect of some interpretation of some law.

After collecting the evidence, they can choose who is guilty and who not, based on bureaucratic ties.
The same situation in court is laughed away one day, and taken very seriously if the "right" advocate defends it before the "right" judge.
