Search for electronic stores.
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:59:09 pm »
Does anyone know if there any electronic stores in Connecticut, USA. I am talking about a store that sells components, equipment, etc because the only one I know of is radioshack and I despise radioshack for this need.
I am an EE with interests in Embedded, RF, Control Systems, and Nanotech.

I know the feeling!  All we've got by me is a Rat Shack as well.  I bought a 2nd of their branded digital multi-meters today to have a second one.  The first has lasted me over 8 years so I figured I'd get the same model.  I took it out of the package, put a battery in, pulled the screen protector off, plugged the leads in, turned it on to read DC Voltage and it whimpered out a pathetic series of sad dieing beeps as the screen flashed a few times and the meter went dead.  I didn't even get to take a single measurement with it!  Upon opening it up there were flakes of solder left over on the board - not cleaned very well at all.  Just brand new junk is all!  Though I must say it's the first time I've seen a surface mount component soldered on at an angle from an IC chip leg onto the top of another surface mount device!

Somewhat sad as I like the meter.  My first one has been through hell and back and never gave me a bit of trouble.  I guess I'll have to look at getting one online now!  Online is my only hope or source for anything electronics related.

Except in Florida and California, and a few in Canal Street in NYC, there are no retail stores except Radio Shack.  You can also find some useful parts in the electrical section of Lowes or Home Depot.

Do not buy gear from Radio Shack!  If you are in a pinch for a fuse, hook up wire, solder, solder wick etc., and cannot wait for Amazon or any online seller, RS is your only solution, at least we still have them.

Is there Fry's Electronics in Connecticut? They usually have a good selection of electronics gear.

Just adding to the list of electronics stores, Dallas still has a brick-and-mortar surplus store (Tanner Electronics).

There's even an online surplus store BG Micro but it does not have much gear.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Canal Street in NYC
I think there is only one on Canal where you can get any parts (269) and it is getting really bad recently. It is hard to get even basic parts there and I think nothing was done about most of inventory for years. I think my visits there were just a waste of time. NYC should be ashamed not to have anything decent with so many people and potential clients :--

I LOVE the "local" Fry's.   Only 2- 2.5 hours away!   However that was disappointing last time I was there as well.  They were getting ready to remodel or rearrange or something, and their method of making it easier was to let as much of it sell out as they could.   I was going to get a Hakko FX-888 when I was there, but they were all sold out of ~ 1/2 of their soldering stations.   I ended up paying $60 more for the Weller WESD51.

Hi, all American individuals need to look at Dan's surplus stores... see his URL:

http://www.danssmallpartsandkits.net/

His based in MISSOULA, MONTANA. 59806-3634.  I have made many purchases from him over the years,
even after the change in US export customs restrictions... give him a look around, you will need lots of
page down time, although his web-site has reduced over these last years.   :-+

For Ic components, get engineering samples!

You've got to have a local electronics supply is some decent size town, and that goes for anywhere in the USA.
The town near me in Iowa, Cedar Rapids (80,000 population). has Iowa Radio, I've never seen a radio anywhere on their counter, but they stock all sorts or real parts, test equipment, books and such for experimenters but they are in biz for the pros.
You should be able to google electronics or radio supply for your location.

I have no local knowledge whatsoever, but how about this?

http://cablesandconnectors.com/

I always thought that US would be easy place to live and get components after seeing all your surplus-stores online.   :o
So I guess you have to live in California preferably near silicon valley to get the benefits...

Here in the land of endless winter and polar bears  ;) I can find at least two component stores in a small city more northern than  Fairbanks in Alaska.

Remember Mouser. There is no minimum, and in the final notes you can ask for 1st. class US mail and save about half over their lowest cost shipping option for small, light weight quantities.

A month ago i did find an office for a company that sells components but it was just an office and not a actual store with shelved components. I really despise radioshack more because of the horribly high pricing ( I got 96 lm317t's on ebay for 20 + 8 shipping) and i calculated that if i was to buy that many from radioshack it would cost me 355 dollars with the tax included. I am too young to remember when radioshack wasn't based on selling phones to dumb customers with clueless employees but i imagine it was great back then :/ . The only reason i want to know if there are any electronics stores near me is because i hate the wait time to get my components through ebay.
