This cant be right ?
« on: June 21, 2016, 10:41:49 pm »
I bought myself a FrSky DHT module, which arrived today.

Knowing that I will have to be making some mods to it I took it out of its shrink wrap, but to my dismay I noticed what I thought was a tombstoned cap =(

Pulling out my trusty usb magnifier, to my amazement, at position C63 I saw this abomination ...

Anyone else seen similar? will it still work =) we are yet to see...

That is a work of art. I have stacked caps during prototyping, but that looks like a blind monkey soldered it.

This is not thombstoned cap (when SMD part lifts vertically and only one terminal is soldered). This is an orgy of 3 caps on top of each other soldered by filthy soldering iron.

It's nice of them to pour that clear goop over it all, so there's no risk of the dirty flux wearing off. Perhaps they thought that would make the stack-o-caps less likely to break off?

My next question is why do people post photos on eevblog by hosting them on sites like photobucket, when eevblog has permanent photo-hosting built in?
And why my usual browser is blocking content like http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t104/BLaKLiTe/shared/module_zpslxzdenlz.jpg, so I don't see these pics at all unless I switch to another browser.

FrSky stuff usually works, but they achieve a price point that is generally well below the leading vendors in their field.  Do you think they do that by magic?

They do not know any better.  It should always be pointed out to them when they do not host on eevblog.

Because smart arses should learn to keep their bright ideas to themselves.

What was a light hearted look at some stoopid soldering, now becomes a pissing match about image hosting..

Or there was a delivery schedule and they had 1s on hand and no 3s available for 6 weeks.  Or the guy who gets them past some customs agent has a brother in law with a warehouse full of 1s.  Lots of possible reasons for this, and while it isn't perfect it meets a need.

None of those are very plausible reasons (plenty of stock in Shenzhen), the only thing I could imagine is that they found they needed really low ESR / inductance (after all there seems to be another footprint for a larger sized cap right next to it, so why wasn't that one used?).

When I've tried previously I get a size exceeded limit, plus, why not offload the work to another server and save eevblog's servers the work, even if it is negligible.

So learn to resize photos. Not like it's hard. Try Irfanview, it's freeware and very good. http://www.irfanview.com/

Multiple reasons. Primarily because when they are on a different site, notoriously that means they will become unavailable at some future time and from then on they are missing in the thread.
Another reason is, like I mentioned happens for me, sometimes particular servers are blocked. I think I might have put photobucket in my block IP list as a result of some obnoxious advertising, so this thread has no pics unless I switch browsers. And I couldn't be bothered checking.

Besides, you say you care about eevblog server load, but you don't bother resizing pics down to a sensible filesize, so apparently don't care about download/bandwith costs of all the readers who end up seeing your pics.

So learn to resize photos.

This is a hard concept for people.  They buy a camera because if has a bigger image, so they think bigger is better.  I hosted a site for a friend and she never could understand this.  In the end I had to take her site down because she kept uploading 4 meg pictures and my server size limit max'd out.

Too bad this is so hard to get across to people.   I gave up on Wordpress because it kept every size and copy on the server.  So towards the end she would upload a 4 meg picture and go through 6 resizes and the picture would end up taking 20 megs!  She never could understand the concept.

Someday I will go for Joomla because I understand it can limit the upload size to what I want.

There are websites that will resize so no software is needed.  FYI I use Faststone

You can set Wordpress to delete the copies if you want. There's even a few good photo management plugins out there.

Nope, there ARE practical reasons why the OP's choice wasn't optimum. When photobucket is down - as it is right now, then the images just aren't available.
Putting things in the one place makes a lot of sense.

None of you know anything about electronics. A blind monkey knows stacking the capacitors is part of a tuned circuit where if the sides are high enough, they will short out to the metal case making the entire thing radiate microwave energy at 1.21 jiggerwatts, drawing power from the stack of fux capacitors.

Seriously, I did find that comment earlier on that it looked like it was soldered by a blind monkey hilarious. I will use that on a few colleagues in jest at the appropriate time.

"You code looks like it was written by a blind monkey"
"What, did you outsource your soldering to a blind monkey?"
"A blind monkey can see I deserve a pay rise"
"A blind monkey could run this company better than you do." :-DD

Using the last one might be CLM (career limiting move)  :palm:.

@terrahertz and @ez24 are you kidding?

No shit it's not hard to resize a picture, but it is more effort than just uploading it to a site and copying the embed code. What's the big issue you take up with this anyways? Aside from the fact that reducing the size will usually reduce the quality.

Did some bad man do bad things to you because you used imgur and now you have flashbacks because people don't upload to the forum or something?

Ad hominem much?

Considering they started with "learn to resize pictures" and "it's a hard concept for people", if they are going to start talking derogatorily to people they can expect it back.
