Total nonsense on eeweb.com
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:51:58 pm »
I was browsing the eeweb.com site and came across a review for the iMSO-104 IPad oscilloscope attachement that I had seen mention of here. Wow, I don't think I will bother with that site again. With total nonsense like this;

"The iMSO-104 is available directly from the Oscium website for $297.99. While this price is a little high in comparison to say a new iPad, it’s certainly a reasonable amount to pay for even an entry level oscilloscope."

stated for a 5Mhz bandwidth, 12Msps, 240 point storage!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is a pure toy made to make the iPad seem more useful. With the Rigol DS1052E still available for $350 and hackable to 100MHz, how can anybody in their right mind make a statement that the price of the iMSO-104 is even close to reasonable?

Sorry for the rant, but I couldn't read that review and let it pass.
It costs more than the crappy nano DSOs, and can ruin a $500 iPad if you get things wrong.

Well this review makes anything I might read on that website totally suspect. I will not bother with going there again. It is things like these that makes one appreciate the brutal honesty that is shared by the host of this site, Dave, and most of the contributors here.

But, but, but it is for the iPad! THE IPAD! All hail the iPad! You can directly post your crappy signals on Fartbook or so. If not with the current version then with the next one - maybe. And don't forget it will enlarge your penis, too.
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

Dont get me started on the Apple plaque. My stepson is a total Apple victim, he has the whole range of Apple toys.
I see a place for Apple products, there iPhone has driven other phone companies to raise there standards (for better or worse?).
I think Apple could make a whole lot more money if they designed Hardware, just hardware, and allowed people to load there own OS, Android for example.

End rant

It might be effective sleazebag marketing if EEweb's target audience wasn't professionals. I'm certain anyone with half a brain can see through the all that crap...and if they don't, then it's a lesson learned the hard way.

Nevertheless, it's rather annoying that EEweb marketing would dare undermine professionals in that manner.

I'm impressed. They actually surpassed the DSO Nano and USB scopes as useless toys that pretend to be test equipment. This product has more sex-appeal than the other toys in that segment, so I expect it to be a success with their intended audience.

I can look at a crappy signal on my Tek 7613,take a picture with a digital camera & post it on Fartbook in a couple of minutes if I want to!

I've given up on the other idea,so it's really no use to me at all! ;D

More expensive and even more crappier, folks!
BUT, the touchscreen interface can only be found on this and some $10K+ LeCroy.
I wouldn't be surprised to see someone claiming his money back after his iPad went poof for hooking the thing up on the wrong side of a transformer.

Oh wait, you could actually turn the iPad into an electrocution device if you hook up the ground clip to the main's hot wire.  ::) Electric taser on the iPad? There's an app for that.

This kind of takes me back to the Agilent Black Friday Giveaway thread. As mistargeted as that idea may have been, I don't think it was even 1/100th as insulting as this sounds.

Where is the direct eeweb link? I can't seem to find it.
I didn't know they did reviews. It sounds like a shame, because the EEweb site is generally an excellent resource.

Dave.

Na, it is a feature they surely only have added for the Australians, due to the high demand there :-)

The $297.99 price tag is just waaay too much. If it were $30, I'd consider it to be a worthwhile toy.

Interestingly the review done by the eeweb "co-founder".  ???

that is not really a review. That looks more like a paid advert...

Absolutely. The right thing to do is declare if it was a paid review or promotional consideration. However I'm sure most EEWeb readers would be smart enough to work it out for themselves.

I'd be interested to see the actual cost price of the thing. I'd be surprised if it costs more than, say $50. I mean, few years ago I picked up a brand new 10MHz toy analogue scope for $60.

In all honesty, I do like the software on the iPad. I was thinking for a while, about the feasibility of a hand-held scope with an iPad size screen, with the same quality of construction and a nice UI to go with it. But with muuuuch better specs compared to this one, of course. Most of the hand held units I've seen do crappy rendering of waveforms; and have a fairly tedious and unimaginative user interface. I mean, you can do so much with cheap OpenGL ES capable GPUs these days... why not use it?
