So, when the National Academy of Sciences decided that the beloved Cornell Professor Carl Sagan 1934 -1996, was insufficiently qualified for membership, Feynman began resigning from all bodies of this type.

He is also the 1994 recipient of the Public Welfare Medal, the highest award of the National Academy of Sciences for "distinguished contributions in the application of science to the public welfare."[14] He was denied membership in the Academy, reportedly because his media activities made him unpopular with many other scientists.[15]
